It was another exciting Sunday in the NFL. Two games had to be decided in overtime. Check the scores to see how your team played, and prepare for Monday Night’s contest between the Titans and Jaguars.

Courtesy of nfl.com

San Diego Not-so-Super Chargers

I bet LaDainian Tomlinson is glad he got out of San Diego when he had the chance. The Chargers are now 2-4 after their second consecutive loss, this time to the Rams. Before the season, if you told me the Chargers would lose to Kansas City, Seattle, Oakland, and St. Louis, I might call you crazy. St. Louis rookie quarterback Sam Bradford found fellow rookie Danario Alexander for a 38-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to take a 10-0. Steven Jackson topped off a 17 play drive with a seven-yard run, and the Rams led 17-3 going into the half. San Diego running back Mike Tolbert finally reached the end zone in the third quarter on a three-yard run. Still down 17-10 in the fourth quarter, the Chargers and kicker Nate Kaeding attempted a 49-yard field goal, but Kaeding slipped as he kicked the ball. The missed field goal would end up being the difference in the game. Rams’ kicker Josh Brown would successfully connect on another field goal before Philip Rivers found Patrick Crayton on a five-yard score, but Rivers wouldn’t get another chance. St. Louis, who won only one game last year, jumped to 3-3 with the 20-17 win.

Bradford finished with 198 yards and one score with no interceptions. Jackson had 109 yards on the ground, 32 yards short of Eric Dickerson’s franchise record. Alexander, appearing in his first game, had a team high four catches for 72 yards. Defensive ends Chris Long and James Hall, as well as linebacker Larry Grant each had two sacks, and tackle Fred Robbins added a seventh for St. Louis. Rivers threw for 249 yards with a touchdown and a pick. Ryan Mathews ran for 64 yards on 12 carries. Crayton led the Chargers with 117 receiving yards. Antonio Gates had only two catches before leaving with an ankle injury.

Big Ben’s Return

Both quarterbacks in this game were making their first starts this season. Rookie Colt McCoy was thrown it the starting role when both Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace went down with injuries. Ben Roethlisberger returns after his suspension to lead his Steelers to another win. On his first drive, Roethlisberger was picked off by Browns’ first round pick Joe Haden, which led to a Phil Dawson field goal. After that, Big Ben found Mike Wallace and Hines Ward for touchdowns. Pittsburgh didn’t abandon the ground game, which won them three games without Roethlisberger. In the fourth quarter, the Steelers took a 21-3 lead on a Rashard Mendenhall run, his fifth touchdown of the year. McCoy threw his first career touchdown to tight end Benjamin Watson on a 12-yard pass. Roethlisberger capped off the day by hitting tight end Heath Miller for his third score of the day.

Roethlisberger went 16-27 for 257 yards with a 122.7 passer rating. Mendenhall ran for 84 yards. Wallace caught three passes for 90 yards, Ward caught five passes for 54 yards, and Miller had only two catches for 50 yards. Linebacker James Harrison knocked Cleveland receivers Joshua Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi out of the game in the second quarter with blows to the head. McCoy threw for 281 yards in his debut, but replied heavily on his tight ends. Only six of his 23 completions went to wide receivers. Watson had six catches for 88 yards, and fellow tight end Evan Moore caught four passes for 84 yards. Peyton Hillis was third on the team with 49 receiving yards in addition to 41 yards on the ground. McCoy also ran for 22 yards.

Game of the Week Results

This week’s Game of the Week between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots was one of two games decided in overtime on Sunday. The Patriots came back from being down 10 at the start of the fourth quarter, and scored 13 unanswered points. The Ravens, who had aspirations of repeating last season’s playoff victory, played well most of the game, but couldn’t hold on down the stretch. Tom Brady didn’t miss Randy Moss, as he and Deion Branch continued where they left off before Branch went to Seattle.

The Patriots took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter on a short run by the “Law Firm”, BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Joe Flacco, who played his best game of the year statistically, found Todd Heap and Anquan Boldin for touchdowns in the second and third quarters respectively. Down 20-10 in the fourth quarter, Brady connected with Branch for a score on his only touchdown pass of the night. Stephen Gostkowski connected on a field goal with less than two minutes left in regulation to tie the game at 20. Each team had three possessions in overtime before Gostkowski booted his third field goal of the day, and the Pats won 23-20.

Courtesy of nfl.com

Brady threw for 292 yards, and doubled his interception total on the year as he was picked off twice. Danny Woodhead lead the team on the ground with 63 yards on 11 attempts, and Green-Ellis added 20 yards on 10 carries. Branch caught nine passes for 98 yards after being virtually ineffective in Seattle. Rookie Aaron Hernandez continued to impress with four catches for 61 yards. Wes Welker added 53 yards through the air, and Woodhead followed up with 52 yards. As I predicted, Flacco had a good game against the New England defense. He completed 77% of his passes for 285 yards with no interceptions. Ray Rice ran for 88 yards on 28 carries. Derrick Mason led the team with 100 yards receiving. Haloti Ngata sacked Brady twice. The Ravens’ defensive backs recorded their first two interceptions on the season as Chris Carr and Ken Hamlin each picked off Brady.

Monday Night Football: Tennessee at Jacksonville

AFC South rivals meet tonight as the Titans and the Jaguars try to keep pace with the Colts and Texans within the division. Currently, both teams are 3-2. The Jaguars are coming off two big wins over the Colts and the Bills, while the Titans loss to Denver in Week 4 before defeating Dallas last week. Both teams have run oriented offenses. Jacksonville is third in the league with 146.8 rushing yards per game, and Tennessee is fifth with 138.2.

The visiting Titans are 2-0 on the road. They are fourth in the NFL in points per game (26.4). Vince Young has a 95.1 passer rating so far this season. He has thrown for 684 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions, and has run for 88 yards. He hasn’t turned the ball over since Week 2 in a loss to the Steelers. Chris Johnson continues his hunt to set the NFL rushing record this week. He was been the key to the Titan’s success again this year. In the three games Tennessee has won, Johnson has at least 125 yards and has scored twice in each game. In the two losses, he averages only 43.5 yards with a 2.5 yard per carry average. The Titan’s leading receivers Kenny Britt and Nate Washington both have three touchdown catches. Defensively the Titans have a NFL best 22 sacks. Defensive end Jason Babin leads the team with five and a half, and end Dave Ball is close behind with four and a half.

The Jaguars have been riding on the tide of quarterback David Garrard’s arm. In their three wins, Garrard averages a 129.7 passer rating, and is completing 78% of his passes. He has 10 touchdowns (one rushing) and only two turnovers (one interception and one fumble lost) in those three games. On the other hand, in his two losses, Garrard has an average 50.8 passer rating with a 53% completion rate. He has only one touchdown pass compared to five interceptions, and was sacked nine times in losses to San Diego and Philadelphia. Maurice Jones-Drew has 406 rushing yards but only one rushing touchdown. Mike Thomas has a team high 21 receptions for 258 yards, and tight end Marcedes Lewis already has a franchise record five touchdown catches. The Jacksonville defense is 29th in points allowed (27.4) and passing yards surrendered (282.2) per game.

Prediction

This will be Tennessee’s first game within the AFC South division. Their two losses have only been by one touchdown each, one coming to a stingy Pittsburgh defense. They average over 33 points a game in their three wins. On the other hand, Jacksonville has played poorly on defense. Although they did defeat Indianapolis, they gave up 352 yards to Peyton Manning. Philip Rivers and a terrible Chargers team scored 38 points against them, and Rivers threw for 334 yards. Even Buffalo was able to score 26 points, and they made Ryan Fitzpatrick look like a Pro Bowler with a 121.5 passer rating. Although both teams have run first offenses, they are both in the top half of the league in run defense. The Titans are 10th with 101.8 yards allowed per game on the ground, and the Jaguars are 12th with 102.8. This game will be decided by the quarterbacks, and I prefer Young over Garrard, especially if the Titans continue to harass opposing QB’s. Tennessee will stay tied with Houston and Indy at 4-2 with a win tonight in Jacksonville.

Can you believe we’re already three weeks into the 2010 NFL season? And some teams are already pressing the panic button, while other teams find themselves off to great starts. Who will be the winners and losers in this week’s edition of NFL action?

Monday’s Results

New Orleans squeaked out a victory in a close battle with the San Francisco 49ers. With little over a minute left in the game, Saints’ kicker Garrett Hartley connected on a 37-yard field goal to give New Orleans a 25-22 lead. Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes. Pierre Thomas ran for 46 yards, and added 57 receiving yards. 49ers’ QB Alex Smith threw for 275 yards, one score, and two picks. Frank Gore ran for 112 yards and a touchdown while adding 56 yards receiving and another score. Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis had a game high eight tackles and a sack for San Fran. The Saints enter Week 3 undefeated, while the 49ers dropped to 0-2. Also on Monday night, the 49ers retired Jerry Rice’s No. 80 at halftime.

News & Notes

Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead at his home on Monday. Investigators believe he took his own life. Reports say that McKinley was depressed after suffering a season ending knee injury. Our thoughts and prayers go out to McKinley’s family and the Broncos organization.

Jets’ receiver Braylon Edwards was charged with a DWI earlier this week. His blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit when he was stopped. Left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson and defensive end Vernon Gholston were also with Edwards. If found guilty, the drunk driving charge would violate the probation Edwards is currently facing after getting in a fight in Cleveland last year, and he could face jail time. Due to the collective bargaining agreement, New York cannot deactivate Edwards for this Sunday’s game in Miami without facing violations. Coach Rex Ryan has said Edwards will play, but not start. Expect a heavy punishment from NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell soon.

Kevin Kolb was named the starter for Week 3 on Monday by Philadelphia Head Coach Andy Reid. A few days later, he changed his mind. Michael Vick has been named the Eagles’ starting quarterback. Vick has resurrected his career in the past two weeks while Kolb recovered from a concussion. He threw for 459 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another 140 yards. Reports say teams have contacted the Eagles about acquiring Kolb.

The Oakland Raiders are letting Jason Campbell watch the game from the bench this week. Backup Bruce Gradkowski will start Sunday against Arizona. Last season, Gradkowski started 4 games in place of JaMarcus Russell, and threw for over 1,000 yards, six touchdown, and finished with a 80.6 passer rating before suffering a season ending injury.

The Ravens and their top draft pick Sergio Kindle have agreed to a one-year deal. Kindle, a second round pick, fractured his skull after falling down two flights of stairs only days before training camp began. Kindle won’t play this year, and will be placed on injured reserve.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Tanard Jackson was suspended until the 2011 season after violating the substance-abuse policy. The four year pro from Syracuse was also suspended the first four games last season for violating the same policy. Jackson was a key piece of the improved Buccaneer defense that has helped the team to a surprising 2-0 start. In 12 starts in 2009, he recorded five interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. Rookie Cody Grimm, son of Hall of Famer Russ Grimm, will replace Jackson.

Injury Report

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells will play this weekend after missing the first two weeks with a bruised knee. Wells has participated in practice all week and reportedly feels much better than in previous weeks. Wells led the Cardinals in rushing yards last season as a rookie.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme will miss his second consecutive game due to a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 1. Delhomme has yet to be cleared to practice, and is still wearing a walking boot. Seneca Wallace will make another start this week.

Percy Harvin returned to practice Thursday after suffering from another migraine headache earlier in the week. Harvin said it had been nearly six weeks since his last migraine, which plagued him throughout the preseason. Harvin is also recovering from a strained hip. To help out a depleted receiving group, the Minnesota Vikings signed former Eagle Hank Baskett.

Courtesy of nfl.com

Saints’ star Reggie Bush will miss at least six weeks with a broken leg. Bush suffered the injury in the Monday night win over San Francisco. Ladell Betts was signed this week to strengthen the New Orleans’ backfield in Bush’s absence.

San Diego Chargers’ running back Ryan Mathews will most likely sit out this Sunday. Mathews sprained his right ankle last week against Jacksonville, and has missed significant practice time this week. Mike Tolbert is expected to start. Last week, Tolbert ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Mathews.

The Steelers will start quarterback Charlie Batch this weekend due to injuries to their other two quarterbacks. Bryon Leftwich is recovering from a knee injury he suffered during the final preseason game, and may be ready to return within the next week. Dennis Dixon underwent knee surgery on Wednesday. Dixon has a torn meniscus and could miss the rest of the season.

Game of the Week: Green Bay at Chicago

The Week 3 Game of the Week is a battle between two undefeated teams on Monday Night Football. NFC North rivals Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears will fight to for the number one spot in the division. The Packers, led by Aaron Rodgers, have been dominating just as expected. However, the Bears are one of the surprise teams three weeks into the season.

Courtesy of nfl.com

Green Bay was a preseason favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Last week, they dominated the Buffalo Bills in a 34-7 win. Strong defense has been a big reason for the team’s success in the past few years. So far in 2010, the Packers defense ranks third in the league in yards allowed per game (253.0) and first in sacks (10). Outside linebacker Clay Matthews leads the league with six sacks. The offense was dealt a significant blow when starting running back Ryan Grant was placed on injured reserve with an injured right ankle. Grant, who had surgery on Tuesday, had rushed for at least 1,200 yards in each of the past two seasons. Brandon Jackson has stepped in for Grant, while John Kuhn has also earned some time in the backfield.

Chicago’s 2-0 start has shocked many. After finishing last season 7-9, the Bears are off to their best start since 2006 when they went to the Super Bowl. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz has worked wonders with an offense that was little more than horrible in 2009. Quarterback Jay Cutler, who led the NFL in interceptions last season, has completed 68.8% of his passes for 649 yards and five touchdowns in the first two weeks of 2010. His 121.2 passer rating is currently the best in the league. Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher, who suffered a season ending wrist injury in Week 1 in 2009, appears to be back to full strength. His defense has allowed a mere 28 yards per game on the ground. Defensive end Julius Peppers, Chicago’s big offseason acquisition, recorded his first sack as a Bear in Week 1 against Detroit.

Key Matchup: Aaron Rodgers vs. Jay Cutler

This game is all about the two starting quarterbacks. Neither team has done a great job on the ground, so this game will most likely be decided through the air. Aaron Rodgers has proved he was the right man to replace Brett Favre in Green Bay. In the past two seasons, he has thrown for over 8,400 yards and 58 touchdowns. He is off to another good start in 2010 with 443 yards and four touchdowns. He also has a rushing touchdown. While Chicago is 27th in passing yards allowed, they have only allowed one touchdown compared to three picks.

Jay Cutler struggled mightily in 2009. He led the NFL with 26 interceptions after two good years in Denver. In his second year in Chicago, he looks like a whole new man. His completion percentage is up eight percent, and he has only one interception so far. His 649 yards ranks third in the league. Cutler has spread the ball around well, too. All seven players who have been targeted have at least five catches. Cutler has a tough challenge ahead of him this week. The Green Bay defense has allowed on 116.5 passing yards per game. Opposing quarterbacks average a 67.9 passer rating.

Prediction

As anticipated, Green Bay has started off the 2010 season on the right foot. The Bears have done a great job exceeding expectations so far. However, their luck runs out this Monday night. The Packers have done a great job getting after the oppositions quarterback. Chicago has questions at left tackle with Chris Williams nursing a hamstring injury. If Clay Mathews can get to Cutler, it will be a long day for the Bears. Aaron Rodgers should have another good game as usual. I don’t expect a high scoring affair as both teams have been playing good defense this year, but Green Bay will leave Chicago 3-0.

The first Sunday of the NFL regular season is in the books. Check out some highlights, as well as scores and Monday Night Football predictions.

Houston, We Don’t Have a Problem

Yesterday’s game between the Colts at the Texans was one of my Sunday surprises. Indianapolis had defeated Houston in 15 of their 16 meetings before yesterday.

Carried by the legs of Arian Foster, the Texans were able to overcome Peyton Manning’s career day. Foster lived up to his preseason hype with a record breaking performance. He had a franchise record 231 rushing yards on 33 carries, and all of his three touchdowns came in the second half. The Texans gained a total of 355 yards on offense, with 257 coming on the ground. Of their 23 first downs, 15 of them were earned on rushing plays. This is a different team than we are used to seeing. Last season, quarterback Matt Schaub threw for a league high 4,770 yards. In the Houston home opener, he had only nine completions for 107 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. On the other side of the ball, defensive end Mario Williams recorded his first sack of the year. While they only sacked Manning twice, the Texans’ defense was able to apply plenty of pressure on him.

Manning had a great game statistically. He went 40-57 for 433 yards and three touchdowns. His 57 attempts was a career high. Austin Collie, Dallas Clark, and Reggie Wayne each had a touchdown grab. Collie had a career high 11 catches for 163 yards, but he also had a critical fumble. After making a big catch inside the 15 yard line, he took a bigger hit from safety Bernard Pollard, turning the ball over one a drive where the Colts could have cut the deficit to 20-17. Instead, Houston went up 27-10 on the following drive. Joseph Addai had only 44 rushing yards. While the Colts survived last year with a less than spectacular rushing offense, they will need to have a more balanced offense next week, even though Manning has won his share of games almost by himself.

Courtesy of atlantafalcons.com

Taking Care of Business & Working Overtime

The Atlanta Falcons and the Pittsburgh Steelers gave us the first overtime game in the 2010 season. This game was definitely a defensive struggle, as neither offense was able to find any rhythm. Falcons kicker Matt Bryant matched Jeff Reed of the Steelers during regulation as each made three field goals.

Michael Turner ran for only 42 yards on 19 carries (only a 2.2 average). Matt Ryan threw for 252 yards, and an interception. Luckily, receiver Roddy White had a good game. As one of my fantasy receivers, White had 13 catches for 111 yards. Tony Gonzalez became the first tight end to reach 1,000 career receptions.

The Steelers found a way to win without Ben Roethlisberger, who started his four game suspension. Dennis Dixon got the game start, and was able to manage the game. Veteran receiver Hines Ward made a few nice catches to help his young QB. The unanimous Player of the Game was running back Rashard Mendenhall. He finished with 120 rushing yards, including a 50-yard game winning touchdown in the first few minutes of overtime. Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu added a pick. Linebacker James Harrison had a fumble return for a touchdown, but it was ruled an incomplete pass as Ryan’s arm was coming forward. While it may not be pretty, Pittsburgh picks up a big win while awaiting Big Ben’s return.

After Further Review…

Normally, I wouldn’t take time to review a game between the Bears and the Lions. However, we can’t overlook the controversy that decided the game. Jahvid Best gave the Lions a 14-3 lead with a pair of touchdown runs. Bears’ running back Matt Forte answered by taking a screen pass 89 yards, outrunning all of the Lions defenders to the end zone with just over a minute left in the half.

Courtesy of nfl.com

On the Lions’ following drive, quarterback Matt Stafford was sacked by Julius Peppers, fumbling the ball, and dislocating his shoulder, and will miss at least a month. Another Chicago star defender Lance Briggs forced a fumble on a sack in the fourth quarter. Backup QB Shaun Hill lost the ball on his own one-yard line. The Lions defense showed up on the next four plays, keeping the Bears out of the end zone. Chicago turned the ball over after a failed fourth down attempt trailing 14-13. Inside the two minute warning, Forte caught another touchdown as the Bears take a 19-14 lead.

This sets the scene for the questionable call. Hill drove the offense to Chicago’s 25-yard line. With less than 30 seconds remaining, Hill throws a jump ball to Calvin Johnson, who out jumps corner Zachary Bowman for what appears to be the game winning reception. He clearly has possession of the ball in his right hand as his left hand, both feet, both knees, and his rear end hit the ground. Johnson then allows the ball to hit the ground in an attempt to break his fall, and loses the ball. According to NFL rules, the receiver must maintain control of the ball through the air and as he falls to the ground. Whereas Johnson thought he had a catch after his feet and other body parts hit the ground, he didn’t control the ball throughout the entire motion of the catch. I personally agree with the call. Whether he knows the rules or not, Johnson must know if the ball hits the ground, it is an incomplete pass, and should have taken the fall and used both hands to hold the ball. Take a look for yourselves here. What do you think, catch or incomplete?

Courtesy of nfl.com

Disappointment in Dallas

My Game of the Week ended in a favorable fashion. Again, it was a low scoring affair, as the Redskins won 13-7. Donovan McNabb earned his first win in a red and yellow uniform, rather than his old green and white. He completed less than 50% of his passes for

only 171 yards, not the box score he was hoping for. He did show his mobility that made him a dual threat in his youth, taking off for a 17 scramble on his first drive. Washington’s only touchdown came on a fumble return by corner DeAngelo Hall. With time winding down in the half, Tony Romo flipped the ball to Tashard Choice, who was stripped by Hall, giving the ‘Skins a 10-0 lead going into the half.

The highlight of Dallas’ night was the lone touchdown throw by Romo. Inside the five-yard line, Romo found star receiver Miles Austin in the back of the end zone in the third quarter to come within three of the Redskins. Austin had 10 catches for 146 yards. After that, neither offense found any success. Dallas had a chance to win the game as Romo found Roy Williams in the end zone with no time left, but the score was called back when tackle Alex Barron was flagged for holding.

What does this game tell us about both teams? Is Dallas heading down another road of failure? They have plenty of talent around them, but can never seem to get the job done. As for Washington, can McNabb and the Redskins make a run for the NFC East title? Or was this just a lucky win due to a poor performance by Dallas?

Monday Night Doubleheader

Baltimore visits the New York Jets in the New Meadowlands Stadium. Darrelle Revis makes his return after signing his big contract. Anquan Boldin will make his first start with the Ravens. This game will be a battle between two extremely strong defenses. I predict a low scoring affair. Rex Ryan’s hardnosed defense will get to Joe Flacco and the Baltimore offense. Give the Jets their first win to open the new field.

The later game tonight will send San Diego to Kansas City. These AFC West rivals will feature some big names at running back. The Chargers will be without Ladainian Tomlinson, who will play in the first game with New York. Rookie Ryan Mathews from Fresno State will replace the future Hall of Fame back. Without Vincent Jackson, who is still holding out, the Chargers should aim to run the ball. The Chiefs have two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield. Jamaal Charles had 1,120 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009. Former Jet Thomas Jones had career highs in yards and touchdowns last year. However, the Chargers should take this game as they aim for another AFC West title.

By Tlarner

Let’s follow as I continue my journey throughout the NFL with my second installment: the AFC North.

“Get Your Popcorn Ready”

Baltimore Ravens

Strength- With the addition of Pro Bowl wide receiver Anquan Boldin from Arizona, the Ravens are expected to have one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Joe Flacco, out of Division I-AA Delaware, enters his third season as the Ravens’ QB. After winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2008, Flacco improved greatly in 2009 and finished the season with an 88.9 rating and 21 touchdowns. Running back Ray Rice is quickly climbing up many fantasy draft charts. Rice ran for 1,339 yards with a 5.3 yard per carry average. He also led the team with 78 receptions. Rice will be complimented by Willis McGahee, who plowed into the end zone 12 times in ’09, and fullback Le’Ron McClain. Baltimore’s receivers, once considered above average at best, are now a serious threat to opposing defenses with Boldin. Not only was Boldin the fastest wide receiver to reach 500 receptions (80 games), his 586 total is the most in Cardinal’s franchise history. Baltimore’s other weapons include Todd Heap, Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, and Donte’ Stallworth.

Weakness- Baltimore always has a strong defense. While the front seven, led by the future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis, will continue to remain stout against the run, the once proud secondary may be vulnerable in 2010. Cornerback Domonique Foxworth was placed on Injured Reserve on August 1st. Foxworth started all 16 games last season, and was tied for the team lead with four picks. The Ravens signed free agent corner Walt Harris in the first week of July, and a month later, also placed him on Injured Reserve. Chris Carr, who has 10 starts in six seasons (four last season with Baltimore), will most likely fill one cornerback position. Corner Fabian Washington only has one interception in the past two seasons with the Ravens. Lardarius Webb, a third round pick from last season, also made four starts and recorded six passes defended and no interceptions. Both Washington and Webb are out of training camp with injuries. Baltimore should be actively searching to trade for a corner. Safety Ed Reed missed all of December in 2009 with various injuries, and it is unknown when he will return after undergoing hip surgery in the offseason and being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Reed’s game changing presence will be missed. He has returned three picks for TD’s in the past two seasons.

Biggest Question- After watching the Ravens easily handle the Patriots in the Wild Card round last year, and the addition of Anquan Boldin and rookies Sergio Kindle and Terrence Cody on defense, it would appear Baltimore has a solid roster at all positions. However, as seen in the cornerback situation, the injury bug has bitten the Ravens. Reed is going to be 32 in September. Is his age catching up to his reckless style? Previously mentioned rookie Kindle will miss at least all of the preseason with a fractured skull after suffering a non-football injury. Ray Lewis is now 35, although he has yet to see any signs of decline in performance. Starting nose tackle Kelly Gregg is 33, and defensive end Trevor Pryce is 35. On offense, the 36 year old Derrick Mason is recovering from a sprained ankle and center Matt Birk, 34, has yet to practice with an elbow injury. Can these veterans continue to maintain such a high work load and remain healthy?

Cincinnati Bengals

Strength- Cincinnati has arguably the best duo in the league at the cornerback spot. Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph locked down the outsides of a defense that finished fourth in the league in total yards allowed, sixth in pass yards allowed per game and points allowed. Individually, Hall and Joseph both picked off six passes, tied with guys like Darrelle Revis and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Statistically, the tandem had seasons almost identical Revis, who may be regarded as the best corner in the league. Hall had 71 total tackles with 30 passes defended. Joseph made 69 tackles, knocked down 24 passes, and returned one of his picks for a touchdown. Revis had only 54 tackles, but interrupted a league high 37 passes. It will be interesting to see how opposing offenses attack the Bengals through the air after these defenders proved they are the best one-two punch in the league.

Weakness- The Cincinnati offense was not the most efficient in 2009. They were 24th in the league in yards per game with 309.1. They also struggled scoring points, with only 19.1 per game, 22nd in the league. Their 12 fumbles lost was also ranked 22nd. Carson Palmer threw for just over 3,000 yards, 21 touchdowns, and completed 60.5% of his passes. Those numbers might not look bad on paper, but they are nowhere near what Palmer did before he missed 12 games in 2008 with an elbow injury. On the bright side, Cedric Benson finally played up to is potential, after being drafted fourth overall by Chicago in 2005. Benson started all 13 games he played in, and ran for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns. The comedian of the league, Chad Ochocinco, had over 1,000 receiving yards for the seventh time in his career. In an attempt to jump start the offense, tight end Jermaine Gresham was taken with the team’s first round pick. The team also signed two free agent receivers, Antonio Bryant and Terrell Owens. Bryant was given a four year deal worth $28 million despite a bum knee, which is still recovering from surgery. After some recruiting by Palmer and his good buddy Ochocinco, the Bengals offered T.O. a one year contract. Owens wants to prove he still has some miles left on his tires.

Biggest Question- The Bengals are known for taking chances on players who have troubled pasts. Many are wondering how well the team will be able to work together, especially the relationship between Ochocinco and T.O. Both athletes have their own reality television shows, and both are known for their over the top celebrations. Owens has a well recorded history of tarnishing his relationships with his quarterbacks, most recently in Dallas with Tony Romo. After a well behaved year in Buffalo, T.O. impressed Palmer during some private workouts, and Palmer went on to persuade the front office to bring him on board. Ochocinco insists he and T.O. are good friends and that there will not be any problems. Another troubled player on the roster is corner Adam “Pacman” Jones. Jones was suspended multiple times for violating the Personal Conduct Policy. The Bengals believe Jones can help as a kick returner and a back-up corner. Benson also had his share of arrests while in Chicago.

Cleveland Browns

Strength- The Browns once again found themselves on the bottom of the AFC North Division. You might not think there was anything to salvage from another 5-11 season. However, the Browns did win their last four games against Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Oakland, and Jacksonville. The Browns were also 8th in the league with 130.4 rushing yards per game. Four different players had over 220 yards, starting with Jerome Harrison who led the team with 862 yards and five touchdowns. Harrison finished the season strong during the win streak with 286 yards and three TD’s against the Chiefs, 148 yards and a score against Oakland, and 127 yards and a touchdown against the Jaguars. Jamal Lewis started eight games and ran for 500 yards, but was cut in the off-season and may retire due to multiple concussions. Joshua Cribbs’ official position is wide receiver, but he was also the main back in Cleveland’s wildcat offense. Cribbs ran for 381 yards and a score with a 6.9 yard per carry average. Another strength of Cribbs that must be mentioned is his kick return ability. He has at least one touchdown via kick return every year since 2005, and a career high three in 2009 (also had a punt return touchdown in ’09). There is no doubt Joshua Cribbs is the most talented athlete on the Browns.

Weakness- The Browns no longer have either quarterback from the 2009 season (Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson). Former Seattle coach and current Cleveland President Mike Holmgren has begun to bring in the players he likes to rebuild the Browns. Veteran Jake Delhomme and former Seahawk Seneca Wallace now fill the quarterback depth chart along with rookie Colt McCoy. While fans hope this trio performs better than the previous duo, without weapons to throw too, the Browns might not improve the worst passing offense in the league. The 37 year old Bobby Engram, also a former Seahawk, is by far the most experienced receiver, but only played in five games and caught five passes with Kansas City in 2009. Mohammed Massaquoi started 11 games as a rookie last year. Fellow second year receiver Brian Robiskie has received some praise in camp. Chansi Stuckey, Syndric Steptoe, and Joshua Cribbs give Cleveland some young athletes, but not the most talented wide receivers.

Biggest Question- How long will it take for the Holmgren effect to turn around the Browns organization? With Quinn traded to Denver for running back Peyton Hillis, Colt McCoy is the new future face of the franchise. Some other big transactions completed under Holmgren include acquiring former Pro Bowl corner Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong from Philadelphia through a trade, signing former Patriot tight end Benjamin Watson, and drafting defensive backs T.J. Ward and Joe Haden. Some of the young talent on the team not already mentioned include fullback Lawrence Vickers, offensive linemen Joe Thomas and Alex Mack, defensive tackle Rubin Ahtyba, linebackers D’Qwell Jackson, Jason Trusnik, and Kaluka Maiava, and corners Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright. The Browns know Holmgren’s personnel can carry the organization down the path less traveled in Cleveland sports, toward a championship.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Strength- The front seven on Pittsburgh’s defense is among the best in the league. Let’s start by looking at the down linemen. Veteran end Brett Keisel recorded 54 total tackles and three sacks in 2009. Nose tackle Casey Hampton started all 16 games and recorded a career high in tackles with 43 and sacks with two and a half. At the other end position, Aaron Smith started the first five games before suffering a shoulder injury. In those games he got to the quarterback twice. Ziggy Hood, a 2009 first round draft pick, should begin to see significant time. Pittsburgh added two more ends through the draft, Jason Worilds (2nd Rnd) and Thaddeus Gibson (4th Rnd). The Steelers also have a talented group of linebackers. LaMarr Woodley led the team with 13.5 sacks in ’09. Former Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison made 79 tackles, 10 sacks, and forced five fumbles. Lawrence Timmons started 13 games, recorded 78 tackles, seven sacks, and four forced fumbles. James Farrior led the team in total tackles with 108. He also had 3 sacks and an interception. Back-up inside linebacker Keyaron Fox started three games, and returned his only pick 82 yards for a touchdown against Minnesota. Returning to Pitt after a season with Detroit, Larry Foote is coming off a 99 tackle season and had two QB sacks with the Lions.

Weakness- I guess it’s a good thing that quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Dennis Dixon are mobile. The offensive line gave up 50 sacks last year, second worst in the NFL. If in fact Dixon starts the season at QB while Big Ben is suspended, the line will need to perform at a much higher level so the inexperienced back-up can find a rhythm. The Steelers also finished 19th in total rush yards, with a 4.2 yard per carry average. To add some salt to the wounds, tackle Willie Colon is on Injured Reserve. Colon started all 16 games for the Steelers from 2007-09. To fill the void, Flozell Adams was recently signed. Adams played left tackle for the Cowboys, and has only missed 14 regular season starts since entering the league in 1998. Dallas cut Adams, 35, this offseason in order to get younger on their line. He will move to the right side where Colon played. Maurkice Pouncey was drafted 18th overall this year to address the line problems. Pouncey became the first center selected by Pittsburgh since the 1937 Draft. The former Florida Gator can also play guard.

Biggest Question- Ben Roethlisberger can practice with the team during training camp, but when the regular season begins, he will be suspended for the first four to six games. League Commissioner Rodger Goodell reportedly will decide if the suspension will be reduced by the end of the month. Another scrambling quarterback Dennis Dixon should get the starts with “Big Ben” on the bench. Dixon made one start in 2009 in a Week 12 loss to Baltimore. He went 12 for 26, with 145 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also ran for 27 yards and a touchdown. The first four games are against Atlanta, at Tennessee, at Tampa Bay, and back home against Divisional foe Baltimore before a Week 5 bye. I see potential losses against Atlanta, the Titans, and the Ravens. If the suspension does reach Week 6, the Cleveland Browns will come to town. Remember, Cleveland did beat Pittsburgh in Week 14 last year. With such a strong AFC, can the Steelers survive a possible 1-3 start?

Division Prediction- The Browns hope to build off a strong finish in 2009 and give their AFC North rivals some trouble this year. If Troy Polamalu stays healthy, and the absence of Big Ben early does not haunt the Steelers, they will make a strong wildcard bid. I wanted to pick the Ravens to win the division, but their weak secondary will be a real problem with non-divisional opponents like the Patriots, the Texans, and the Saints. The Bengals have given Palmer some solid weapons to revamp the offense, and the defense will remain strong. Give Cincinnati their second straight AFC North Championship.

Coming Friday: AFC South.

By Paul Gotham

Born on a bayou

Rumors of the Saints’ demise proved untrue. So too did the rumors that New Orleans lacks a defense.

Reggie Bush brought the wood. Drew Brees reminded Saints fans of what he is capable. Jeremy Shockey returned to the lineup, and the Saints’ defense made like some “old hound dog barkin.’ Chasin’ down a hoodoo there.”

Bush pounded out 217 all-purpose yards and became the first player since Charlie Taylor, in 1947, to rush for a touchdown and to return a punt for touchdown in the same post-season game. Bush led the Saints on to the field carrying a baseball bat with the inscription: “Bring the wood” – the Saints rally cry.

Brees threw for three touchdowns for the first time since a 26-23 win over Atlanta on December 13th. He hooked up with Shockey mid-way through the first quarter and the Saints never looked back from there. The Purdue grad later connected with Devery Henderson and Marques Colston.

Those expecting this game to resemble a shootout were surprised when the Saint defense clipped the Cardinals’ wings. Arizona managed just 14 points on 359 total yards. One week after scoring 51, the Cardinals offense met a stronger force in the Saints D. Arizona’s defense surrendered 90 points in two playoff games.

Arizona added to their own misfortune with two turnovers.

New Orleans moves on for a chance to bring Cajun country its first Super Bowl appearance.

“Wish I was back on the bayou rollin’ with some Cajun Queen. Wish I were a freight train, oh just a chooglin’ on down to New Orleans.”

Call me lightning

Like New Orleans, the Colts shook off any signs of rust. Indy’s offense did just enough. Their defense did more than enough, and the offense might have made the defensive play of the game.

For 25+ minutes the Colts and Ravens stood deadlocked at three. Indy’s offense, which showed a quick strike ability all season, resorted to an old-fashioned 14-play drive that took eight minutes. The result: a ten-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Manning to Austin Collie.

Then, just when the Ravens thought they would go into halftime within striking distance, Manning and the Colts struck like lightning.

Indy grabbed a 17-3 lead at half with an eight-play, 64 -yard drive in 83 seconds culminating with a Manning to Reggie Wayne touchdown.

Baltimore looked poised for a comeback when Ed Reed picked off a Manning pass and returned the ball deep into Colts territory. It was at this point, the Colts offense made the defense play of the game. Looking more like a defensive back than a wide receiver, Pierre Garcon chopped the ball from Reed, and Indy recovered on its own 24 yard line. Reed intercepted another Manning pass on the same drive. That pick was nullified by a penalty.

Indy added an insurance field goal early in the fourth.

One week after scoring 33 points in a rout of New England, the Ravens offense managed little against the Indy defense. Ray Rice ran for 83 yards on the opening play of the New England game. Indy held the Ravens to 87 yards rushing for the game. After their first drive of 15 plays, Baltimore longest drive consisted of just six plays as Indy frustrated the Ravens all day.

“You can’t catch me I’m as fast as can be. Call me lightning I’m as fast as can be.”

Purple haze

Dallas entered play Sunday with the league’s second-rated offense. The Cowpokes left the game thinking “lately things just don’t seem the same.”

Brett Favre threw for four touchdowns, and the Minnesota defense drowned Tony Romo in a sea or purple.

Favre connected with Sidney Rice three times as Minnesota pounded Dallas, 34-3.

The 21st century Viking defense reminded fans of the ‘Purple People Eaters’ as they sacked Romo six times, forced two fumbles, and picked off one Romo pass.

Gerald Sensabaugh might have provided the best representation of the ‘Pokes ineptitude. With a 45-yard pass from Favre hanging in the air, and the entire state of Texas yelling – “SEE THE BALL,” Sensabaugh stared at Rice, and pigskin floated over his shoulder for a catch and touchdown.

“Purple haze all in my eyes. Don’t know if it’s day or night. You’ve got me blowin’, blowin’ my mind. Is it tomorrow? Or just the end of time?”

Reason to believe

Sexy Rexy Ryan and his Gang Green crashed yet another party. With all the higher seeds holding serve, the New York Jets earned a spot in the AFC Championship. Despite being on the road for the second week in a row the Jets found a “reason to believe.”

This despite the fact that the Jets won their final two regular season games against teams sitting out most of their starters. All that behind them, the Jets held the San Diego Chargers to half their season average of points in a 17-14 victory.

The Jets stopped the Chargers short of the goal line three times, and Nate Kaeding missed three field goals.

Mark Sanchez completed 12 of 23 passes including a two-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Keller, and Shonn Greene proved lightning can strike twice with a 53-yard tocuhdown run.

Greene had a 39-yard touchdown run against Cincinnati the week before.

“At the end of every hard earned day, people find some reason to believe.”

Your own worst enemy has come to town

Next weekend sets up the possibility of the cruelest of ironies.

In week 15, Indy pulled its starters and gave up the possibility of perfection. The New York Jets were the direct beneficiary. Without that win, the Jets would NOT have qualified for the playoffs. How will the Colts handle the dream they have given birth to?

Brett Favre led the Packers to a victory in Super Bowl XXXI. The site of that game? The New Orleans Super Dome. Next week’s game between the Vikes and Saints returns Favre to a place where he is comfortable.

“There’s a face you know. Staring back from the shop window. The condition you’re in. Now you just can’t get out of this skin.”

By Paul Gotham

Staying undefeated

One quarter of the NFL season done (at least for most of the league), and four unscathed – Minnesota notwithstanding. And, no that is not intended to be a prediction for the Monday Night outcome. Prior to the season, this discussion could have had a ‘Sesame Street’ theme to it – as in one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn’t belong. Enough of that. You get the idea. Sure, the Giants, Saints, and Colts all fit. But did anyone predict the Broncos to be 4-0? As I was saying, this could have used a ‘Sesame Street’ theme. But the Broncos are proving they belong. 26 is the key statistic for Josh McDaniels’s squad. 26 represents the number of points allowed. No typo here. After four games, Denver has protected the end zone better than any other team. The next closest is San Francisco with 53 points. To date, the Broncos have allowed two touchdowns.

Kyle Orton is benefiting from the defensive pressure. We could do a blind resume, but I’ll spare everyone the anticipation. Or maybe I won’t. Yesterday, Orton went 20-29 for 243 yards, 0 interceptions, and two touchdowns. His counterpart went 25-41 for 255 yards, 1 interception, and zero touchdowns. Yeah, Orton isn’t as sexy as Tony Romo. He just gets the job done. Wonder if Jessica Simpson has designs on joining Kyle’s ‘mile-high’ club?

The stat for Indianapolis must be 300. As in 300 yards per game. For the first time in his career, Peyton Manning has opened the season with four 300-yard games. So much for missing Marvin Harrison and Tony Dungy. Manning’s strike to Reggie Wayne was the 55th time the teammates have combined. Only Manning and Dan Marino have thrown 55 or more TDs to two different receivers. The Colts only figure to improve when Bob Sanders returns.

AP Photo/Bill Feig

After week two, Drew Brees had everyone trying to guess what his nine touchdown passes would convert to over 16 games. Since then, Pierre Thomas and Darren Sharper have taken care of getting the ball in the end zone. Thomas rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns last week. This week, Thomas 86 yards on the ground, caught four passes for 46 yards and scored one TD. Sharper has five interceptions this season – two returned for touchdowns including one for 99 yards yesterday against the Jets. The New Orleans defense pressured Mark Sanchez so much that the Jet rookie quarterback must have dreamed of fleur-de-lis last night. With the win, New Orleans goes into the bye week undefeated as they prepare for the Giants.

Speaking of the Giants. Call it chocolate. Call it vanilla. Call it what you want. The Giants have had a cake walk thus far. After spanking the wet rag Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the G-Men pounded on the Chiefs yesterday. Please wake me when the Giants play a relevant team. It is nice that Mario Manningham and Steve Smith have made fans forget of past Giant receivers.

The New England Houdinis

Somehow, the Patriots escaped defeat in week one when Buffalo’s Leodis McKelvin fumbled a kickoff. This week, the Ravens were driving with less than :30 in the game, when Mark Clayton dropped a fourth-down pass inside the ten yard line. Of his miscue, Clayton commented: “Flat out drop.”

Despite revamping almost their entire defense, not having Wes Walker, and Tom Brady recovering from reconstructive knee surgery, the Patriots stand at 3-1. Guess we shouldn’t be surprised by a Bill Belichik-coached team.

Which way to Asbury Park?

After a “month-long vacation in the strasophere where he found it really hard to hold his breath,” Mark Sanchez came crashing back to earth yesterday. In a sea of fleur-de-lis, the rookie went 14-27, 138 yards, 0 TDs, and 3 INTs. Ouch! Don’t worry Mark. It’s all part of ‘ooh-ooh growin’ up.’ Besides the Jet defense held the high-flying Saints without an offensive touchdown for 50+ minutes.

Converting on third down

Joe Flacco might not get the headlines, but the Raven QB gets first downs. In their loss to New England, Baltimore converted on 9 of 14 third down opportunities. Flacco went 8-11 in those situations. Maybe he needs to improve on taking a roughing the passer.

Get the fork ready

Remember when Tennessee began last year 10-0? Remember how the Titans earned home-field advantage in last year’s playoffs? That all seems a distant memory as the Titans fell to 0-4. The last team to go 0-4 and make the playoffs? The 1992 San Diego Chargers. Yeah, yeah, yeah the Titans went 1-4 in 2002 before making AFC title game.

It is hard to believe March is here already. While it may have snuck up on us, it has certainly started off with a bang. First March has brought us a new release from the Irish rockers, U2 ( ‘No Line on the Horizon’). But March has also brought us the beginning of NFL Free Agency. I must admit, writing an article while listening to a brand new release is the way to go! Earlier this year it was Bruce Springsteen – this week – it is U2 reminding us why they remain a force to be reckoned with. I must admit ‘Moment of Surrender’ has been the first song to grab me – but many of the other songs are quickly moving up the board.

The NFL has also seen a flurry of activity within the first 72 hours of its free agency period. I am here to hopefully to make sense of what has happened. In order to do that, let’s take a look at the last 72 hours winners and losers:

Winners:

New York Jets – The Jets have been active early on in this free agency and have added quality pieces to the puzzle. Think new head coach Rex Ryan isn’t preaching defense wins game? Within the first 24 hours, the Jets added serious muscle to their defense adding lineback Bart Scott from the Ravens and trading for CB Lito Shepard from the Philadelphia Eagles. Monday, the New York Ravens…errr Jets continued their purge of the Ravens when they lured safety Jim Leonhard away. The Jets also released Lavernus Coles and with the retirement of Brett Farve – there is obvious work that needs to be done on the offensive side of the ball. But for now, the Jets have gotten off to an aggressive start.

Washington Redskins – Yes, the Redskins make the list and it seems like they make a big splash every offseason. So is it ever going to translate? Not sure right now, but the pressure is going to be on second year coach Jim Zorn after the additions of Albert Haynesworth and the resigning of DeAngelo Hall. People, including myself are questioning whether Haynesworth is worth $100 million dollars, but if it translates into capturing the NFC East, then consider it a bargain.

Kansas City Chiefs – First the Chiefs overhauled the front office and the coaching staff. Scott Pioli and Todd Haley are going to bring excitement and optimism to Kansas City. With one trade they managed two things – get a good young quarterback in Matt Cassel, a good LB in Mike Vrabel, and help create a mess in Denver. Cassel is not going to be Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but given the right system and with good targets – he is going to be an effective QB in the NFL. With Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez as his targets – Cassel has the weapons. Add another quality receiver to that mix and the AFC West is certainly up for grabs.

New England Patriots - No homer alert here. By dealing Cassel and Vrabel, the Pats were able to clear up $19 million dollars in cap space. This allowed for the signings of Fred Taylor and Chad Baker. Taylor could end up being a key pick up, since the Pats tend to run the ball by committee. Also, by acquiring the #34, the Pats have now put themselves in a position of having a late first round pick and 3 second round draft picks in a draft that is considered by many to be very deep. Expect the Pats to concentrate on shoring up an aging defense.

Losers

Denver Broncos – Sure the Broncos have added some nice additions in S Brian Dawkins, WR Jabar Gaffney and RB Correll Buckhalter. But where the Broncos have shot themselves in the foot is in the apparent attempt to deal for Matt Cassel and trade current QB Jay Cutler. Obvious new coach Josh McDaniels is comfortable with the QB he has worked with – but if you are going to gamble, you had better have the cards. The Broncos gambled in their attempt to get Cassel and now have a major problem on their hands. Cutler is unhappy that they tried to trade him and now wants out. Problem is, the Broncos don’t have an ideal replacement and now have egg on their face.

Buffalo Bills – For a team that does need help, they sure look comfortable. For the Bills the only activity over the weekend has brought a new backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to the team. I suppose for Bills fans the end of J.P Losman era is a nice start, but the Bills faltered when they lost Fred Taylor to the Patriots. With Marshawn Lynch facing a possible 4 game suspension to start the season, Taylor would have been a nice replacement for the first quarter of the season. The addition of C Geoff Hangartner was a nice pickup, but the rest of the teams in the AFC East are improving their rosters immensly. Is it enough? Of course there is a report that the Bills have signed CB Drayton Florence and are bringing in the likes of Cato June and Lavernus Coles for a visit. This grade could change, but for the first 72 hours, they get a failing grade.

Cincinnati Bengals - When you biggest free agent signing this offseason has been Cedric Bensen – you know you have problems. Plus, the Bengals lost their best and most dependable wide receiver – T. J. Houshmandzadeh. Are th Bengals expecting Chad Johnson to clean up his act this year? Good luck. Think Carson Palmer is sitting back and thinking – ” Hmmm, Tampa Bay needs a QB, maybe even Denver..”.

Baltimore Ravens – So far the Ravens are being ravaged. Gone are starters Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard. Ray Lewis remains unsigned and Samari Rolle wants out. Good news though, Kyle Boller is available in case you want to bring him back as a back up QB. Of course the Bills passed over him…

Similar to the dropping temperature in Rochester, NY – teams left in the NFL playoffs are slowly dwindling to a mere four. While most teams are beginning to plan for the proverbial “next” season (including the annual pillage of the Patriots’ coaching staff and front office), this Sunday’s results will determine who represents each respective conference in Super Bowl XLIII. One game features a battle of 2 of the best defenses currently in the NFL, while the other showcases 2 teams that most people nearly wrote off about 6 or 7 weeks ago. Let’s break down both games:

AFC – Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The terrible towels will be in full force on Sunday, as this games features 2 of the best defenses in the NFL. Baltimore’s defense continued to be opportunistic and forced the Tennessee Titans offense into 5 turnovers on Sunday. Expect them to look to do the same. Problem is – this is the best offense they have faced to date in the playoffs. Ben Roethlisberger has multiple weapons to distribute the ball in Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Nate Washington and Heath Miller. In tight situations look for Big Ben to go to his favorite target -Hines Ward. That being said – if weather conditions allow, expect the Steelers to stretch the field and go over the top to Holmes early. Keeping the Ravens defense honest will hopefully allow the Steelers to open some holes for Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore. Parker appears to be finally healthy, but the Steelers will need to have success running the ball on Sunday, or Ravens will sit back and give Big Ben headaches all day. Joe Flacco is quickly turning into the James T. Kirk of rookie quarterbacks – going where no rookie quarterback has yet to go. He will certainly have his work cut out for him against a very good Steelers’ defense. Flacco did show a lot on Sunday making some fantastic throws against the Titans – but will he be able to do it again in a very hostile environment? Will the Ravens be able to help out Flacco by running the ball? Considering that Heinz Field is quickly becoming the Bermuda Triangle for Field Goal kickers – do the Ravens want to rest the outcome of the game on Matt Stover’s foot?

Prediction: I am not sure that the Ravens are going to have success moving the ball against the Steelers, and I don’t see the Steelers self-destructing like the Titans did last week. The Ravens defense will keep it close, but in the end, too many options on the Steelers’ offense. Pittsburgh 23 Baltimore 10.

NFC – Philadelphia Eagles vs. Arizona Cardinals

First, let me apologize to Ken Whisenhunt and the Cardinals for doubting them last week. Guys, I had your back the last week – just didn’t think you had it in you against Carolina. You proved me wrong. The Eagles continue to look impressive as their Giants-like run to the Super Bowl continues for another week. Again the Cardinals are home – a huge factor. This Cardinal team – especially their defense, really feeds off crowd energy. And this defense has played extremely well in the first 2 rounds of the playoffs. Their offense has been exceptional as well with Larry Fitzgerald making acrobatic catches and giving defenses nightmares. Anquan Boldin missed last week – will he be able to play this week? If not Steve Breaston will be expected to step in and deliver. Also TE Stephen Spach was injured in the game against the Panthers with a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the playoffs – another weapon, another comfort zone for Warner, will not be there on Sunday. How much will this affect the Cardinal game plan and how will it affect Warner’s distribution of the ball? Can Asante Samuel cover Larry Fitzgerald or will he need help? If he can’t, Brian Dawkins will be forced to help out against Fitzgerald leaving the backside defensive back in a 1 on 1 situation. Hence the importance of Anquan Boldin being healthy or Steve Breaston stepping up. If so, it could be a long day for the Eagles defense. Expect Jimmie Johnson to blitz early and blitz often. Not letting Warner get comfortable in the pocket will be key for the Eagles.

As for the Eagles’ offense – how healthy is Brian Westbrook? Reports are coming in of a swollen knee and a high ankle sprain. Will the Eagles’ offensive line give Donovan enough time to hit his targets. One of the keys to the Eagles win over the Giants was their ability to convert on third down – including some third and really long situations. I am sure Andy Reid would love to avoid those situations this Sunday. Will the Eagles continue their third down success? IF they can keep the Cardinals defense on the field – it certainly help take the pressure off the Eagles’ defense. The Cardinals defense was opportunistic on Saturday, forcing 5 INTs from Jake Delhomme – can they do it again? Can they force the Eagles to turn over the ball, as the Giants were able to pick off McNabb twice on Sunday? Will Andy Reid design plays in an attempt to get Westbrook the ball more?

Prediction: This is going to be a great game, and if anyone says this is going to be an easy one to predict – they are out of their mind. In the end – while I would love to see the Cardinals in the Super Bowl - the Eagles defense and their ability to play on the road will lead the Eagles to a victory and a Super Bowl berth. Philadelphia 33 Arizona 28.

Super Bowl XLIII – An all Pennsylvania match up – Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Enjoy the games!!
