“Because there is always room for one more on the bench.”
“No matter what sport you like these guys got it covered. ”
Some will tell you that to be successful, you need to get a good start. That didn’t always work for me. The year I won my Cy I didn’t even get picked for the all-star game.
Evens and odds. Odds or evens. They came up with a theory about me. I was only good on the odd years. Ha. I guess they were right. After all, it was an odd-numbered year when I won my first Cy Young along with a World Series MVP.
You could call me gas and electric because I was all about utility. Shoot, about the only positions I did NOT play were the battery. I broke in at short. Then came along some young star.
Mine was a case of what if. After struggling to find the strike zone early in my career, I righted my way, and it seemed I could do nothing but throw strikes. Then it was all over before I had a chance to prove myself.
I am a rarity of sorts. There aren’t any others in my line of work like me. Of the 286 former major league players who’ve become managers since 1946, just 22 have occupied the same position on the field as me.
I know a thing or two about trying to live up to expectations. Geez. I came up through a farm system where the big league club won four Gold Gloves a year five times in eight seasons.
If only I could get back those lost years. Some guys lost years because of the war. Some guys lost time because of injury. Me? I lost time time because I played in the Mexican Leagues.
Ten years elapsed between my all-star game appearances. Yeah, I realize that is kinda vague as far as clues go. I grew up “where they make the cars, but by night they make the bars.” The latter ruled much of my career.
Major League pitchers from Chapman University – that is a short list. Cy Young award winners from Chapman University – that’s an even shorter list, but I am on those lists. I won 42 games in two years…
It might be difficult to imagine this, but after my life on the diamond, I got into the doll business. People struggle to understand that. After all, I manned the hot corner for most of my 16 seasons. I never grabbed the headlines like my teammates.
