“Because there is always room for one more on the bench.”
“No matter what sport you like these guys got it covered. ”
We’re less than 2 weeks away from the 2010 college football season kick-off, and the Irish start the season by taking on Purdue Sept 4 at Notre Dame Stadium. So of course ND fans everywhere are engaging each other in the annual August ritual of voicing either expectations or “hopes” for the upcoming season. And as usual, NDNation.com has run their annual “probability poll” in which thousands of Irish followers take 10 minutes to assess ND’s chances of winning each game on the schedule as a % likelihood of winning.
Shhhhhh….did you hear that? Tick, tock, tick, tock…The time is drawing near. College pigskin kicks off on Thursday, September 2nd with 18 games including openers for Ohio State, Miami, Pittsburgh and even Lane Kiffin’s folly. There is no playoff, so, as the talking heads say: EVERY GAME MATTERS. Here are a few games that might matter more than others.
The NCAA has announced the Southern Cal Trojans must vacate 14 wins in the 2004 & 2005 seasons. This announcement created some discussions about how The College Football Belt should handle the situation. The concept of The Belt is simple & therefore made the decision on how to handle the Trojans sanctions simple.
All the Big Ten did was say it was thinking about expanding, and that was enough, for some, to declare the end of collegiate athletics as we know it. All the Big Ten needed to do was talk about Texas in a let’s-just-do-some-spitballin’-after-lunch sort of way…
I just read a very thoughtful and provocative top-to-bottom analysis of the ND basketball program. Also sheds quite a bit of light on the Big East. The author did quite a bit of research and his very reasonable recommendations are built on that homework.
By Wally Actually, there’s apparently three ways to count college football national titles … and whenever a team like Alabama wins a title and claims it’s their 13th national title, you hear whispers in the crowd … like “How is that possible?” “Really … that many?” and “I thought this was only their 8th”. And [...]
Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy had a good message. He wanted to protect his player. The fact that he reminded folks that he coaches students and not professionals is admirable. It’s just that about two minutes into his tirade bystanders had to worry about their personal safety.
I’ve been pretty good this year … okay, maybe just a bit better than average … so I have a pretty modest wish list for you. The great thing about this list is that you don’t have to rush the elves to GET ‘ER DONE by 12/25. Nope, this list can be accomplished over several weeks … even months, if not years. Okay … coming clean here … some of the items are nearly miracles, so you might want to get some help from YOU KNOW WHO. So this is what I want, in no particular order, but the most important stuff is definitely at the end:
By Wally I couldn’t wait for Open Thread Thursday to toss this one out there. Heck, we’re only a few hours away from Thursday on the Right Coast anyway. So there’s been a whole lotta chatter on ESPN and various other sites about the Big 10 wanting to expand from 11 to 12 teams (How silly [...]
A new era began for Notre Dame football on Friday as new coach Brian Kelly was introduced to the media. There’s a lot written and videoed about Brian Kelly and how he fits with Notre Dame on ESPN, MSN, Fox, etc … obviously, the ND coaching job is still quite relevant given the wall-to-wall coverage this week. It’s not an easy job, but it is still very prestigious. The consensus among the experts seems to be that Kelly is a really good fit for this job.
