Chasing Tiger | Padraig Harrington

While Camilo’s name will begin to come up in conversations regarding the top players on the PGA tour – it is time to continue our look at golfers who may replace Tiger Woods as the best player in the world. Up this week – Padraig Harrington. Harrington joined the tour in 1995 and has not looked back.

Chasing Tiger: Steve Stricker

Over the last two days, reporters have been lining up to announce that Tiger Woods is hitting golf balls. Tiger Woods is running and getting into “golf shape”. In some ways it is a modern day version of Paul Revere’s midnight ride letting fellow New Englanders know that the British were coming. This time it is fellow PGA golfers taking notice. Tiger Woods is coming! Tiger Woods is coming!

Chasing Tiger….

This just in – Tiger Woods interrupted my vacation and I want an apology!! As I enjoying the last remaining rays of the Florida sun before having to head back to winter, Tiger Woods was less than 2 hours away – making the world stop.

Wally’s Holiday Wishlist

I’ve been pretty good this year … okay, maybe just a bit better than average … so I have a pretty modest wish list for you. The great thing about this list is that you don’t have to rush the elves to GET ‘ER DONE by 12/25. Nope, this list can be accomplished over several weeks … even months, if not years. Okay … coming clean here … some of the items are nearly miracles, so you might want to get some help from YOU KNOW WHO. So this is what I want, in no particular order, but the most important stuff is definitely at the end:

The 2009 PGA Championship

Some may call it the black sheep of the majors. Some even forget that it is a major. But starting Thursday, August 13th, the fourth and final major of the 2009 season gets under way – the PGA Championship. This year, the PGA Championship is being hosted by Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

Destination – Royal Turnberry

I suppose any golf purist would say that it is only fitting that each year a major golf tournament is played in the country credited with creating the very sport. Which is why this week all eyes will be focused on the Ailsa Course at Turnberry for the 2009 British Open. The course which hugs the coast line of Scotland – measures out at over 7,200+ yards and Mother Nature will certainly be a major factor. Turnberry is rich in history, having originally been created in the early 1900s. For the most part, the golf course survived 2 World Wars, losing only part of the course to aircraft hangars and runways. In fact most of the golf cour

Tuesdays with Smitty: The LPGA Invades Rochester, NY

Just as the golf world is starting to recover from its Bethpage “hangover”, the LPGA begins its week here in Rochester, NY. Featuring 144 women golfers, the Wegmans LPGA celebrates its 33rd year at the Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, NY. Known as one of the favorite stops for most of the members in the LPGA, Rochester has seen Hall of Famers such as Patty Sheehan, Nancy Lopez, Kathy Whitworth and future Hall of Famers such Lorena Ochoa and Karrie Webb win multiple championships as the Wegman LPGA.

Tuesdays with Smitty: 109th U.S. Open

On Thursday, June 18th the eyes of the golfing world will converge in Farmingdale, NY for the 109th U.S. Open. 156 golfers – professional and amateur will vie for one of the most coveted titles within the world of golf – U.S Open Champion. But in order to do it, they will have to conquer Bethpage Black, a 7,214 yard beast. Add in the traditional U.S. Open rough and the course is likely to leave some of the best golfers in the world scratching their heads.

Meeting Bethpage…

I am sure everyone by now has been reading and hearing the headlines, ” Tiger takes on Bethpage” or “The U.S. Open returns to Bethpage Black”. The course almost sounds like a rare form of plague – “Have you heard about Johnny ? He has the Bethpage Black…..” Something just doesn’t sound right.

Tuesdays with Smitty: Praying to Amen Corner

I think that this is going to be a yearly article for me. As college basketball having already crowned its king, is on the verge of crowning its queen and coming to an end. Major League Baseball is underway, but all eyes will turn to the PGA this week as the greatest tournament in professional golf takes place – The Masters. Thousands will flock to Augusta National Golf Club this weekend to see who brings home the elusive Green Jacket. Thousands will go to watch the practice rounds – probably more for the chance to walk the course then to watch Phil Mickelson work on his short game. Thousands will blow off weekly chores and watch from home.
