PORTSMOUTH, VA – Iona College men’s basketball senior guard Sean Armand has been invited to the 62nd Annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Portsmouth, VA. The three day tournament runs Wednesday (Apr. 16) through Saturday (Apr. 19) at Churchland High School Sports Complex.

With Armand’s selection an Iona men’s basketball student-athlete has been represented at the prestigious P.I.T. in three straight years. His former teammates Mike Glover and Lamont Jones appeared in the 2012 and 2013 events. The Gaels join Florida, Oral Roberts and Temple as the only NCAA Division I programs to have players in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in each of the last three seasons.

Each year for 61 years the Portsmouth Invitational has invited 64 of the best college basketball players (seniors) from across the nation to participate in a four-day, twelve-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team. The tournament drew the attention of NBA Scouts and General Managers in the mid-70’s when players like Dave Cowens, John Lucas, Walt Szczerbiak and Bobby Cremins came to Portsmouth to play. Soon the word spread and approximately 200 Scouts, General Managers and Representatives of all 30 NBA teams began to come to see players like John Stockton, Dennis Rodman, Tim Hardaway, Scottie Pippen and others. Today scouts from numerous international leagues have joined in on the annual April pilgrimage to Portsmouth. Over the years the P.I.T. has been a showcase for five of the 50 greatest players in NBA History (Rick Barry, Earl ‘The Pearl” Monroe, Dave Cowens, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen) and for many others who have gone on to NBA stardom.

Armand will play for coaches Ben Moore and Dennis Koutoufas and Cherry Bekaert alongside Morehead State 6-11 center Chad Posthumus, Arkansas-Little Rock 6-10 forwrad Will Neighbour, Davidson 6-7 forward De’Mon Brooks, Florida State 6-8 forward Okaro White, Duke 6-4 guard Andre Dawkins, San Diego State 6-3 guard Xavier Thames and Tennessee State 6-0 guard Patrick Miller.

Play begins Wednesday and a full schedule for Cherry Bekaert’s contests can be found on ICGaels.com when available.
