DALLAS – FGCU’s Chase Fieler will participate in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at 9 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, April 3, at Moody Coliseum on the campus of Southern Methodist University. Fieler, who helped rebrand FGCU into #DunkCity, will take part in the Denny’s Slam Dunk Championship live on ESPN as part of Final Four Weekend.

Fieler (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South HS) first appeared on the national radar with a polarizing one-handed alley-oop finish in the late stages of FGCU’s upset of second-seeded Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament last year. That dunk turned Fieler and FGCU into household names, but it was just one of a team-leading 59 slams during the 2012-13 campaign. Coupled with his thunderous finishes this year, Fieler has thrown down an incredible 83 dunks in the last two seasons – well more than one dunk a game.

Fans can integrate themselves into the contest by voting via Twitter and serving as the “Fifth Judge.” Fans can vote on every dunk by simply tweeting #CollegeSlam, followed by the player’s last name and a score between 1 and 10 (e.g. #CollegeSlam #Fieler10). From there, an average rating will be calculated and that rating will be paired with the four celebrity judges’ scores to make up each player’s total score. The celebrity judges will be announced later in the week.

Current players set to compete against Fieler include Ronald Roberts (Saint Joseph’s), Cleanthony Early (Wichita State) and Marcus Lewis (Eastern Kentucky), the latter of whom won the fan vote on Facebook earlier this spring as a “Dark Horse” dunker. Like the celebrity judges, the complete field will be announced later in the week.

It will mark the second straight year a player from FGCU will be highlighted as last April Sherwood Brown was selected to participate in the Hampton Hotels Men’s 3-Point Championship. Brown finished his 119-game career as the only player in program history to join both the 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs.

Fieler surpassed both of those marks as the Eagles’ lone senior will graduate as the only player in program history with at least 1,000 career points (1,306) and 600 rebounds (714). The 6-8 forward finished second on the FGCU roster in scoring this year (13.6 per game) while leading the Green and Blue and ranking second in the Atlantic Sun Conference in rebounding (7.4 per outing). Fieler helped guide FGCU to a 22-11 record this past year, earning the program’s first Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season championship and advancing to the NIT for the first time.

The 26th annual event features 24 of college basketball’s best dunkers and long-range shooters. Additional elements of the night include the Quicken Loans Men’s 3-Point Championship, the Buick Women’s 3-Point Championship and the Echo Battle of the Champions.

Alumni of the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships include Gary Payton (Oregon State), Steve Nash (UC-Santa Clara), Allan Houston (Tennessee), Bobby Hurley (Duke), Michael Finley (Wisconsin), Wes Matthews (Marquette) and Mario West (Georgia Tech). Last year, Detroit’s Doug Anderson won the dunk contest.
