MACON, Ga. – Coming off the program’s first Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season championship, FGCU juniors Brett Comer and Bernard Thompson have both been named to the A-Sun First Team, while lone senior Chase Fieler has landed on the Second Team, as voted on by the league coaches and announced by conference officials Monday.

Comer (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) and Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) both garner all-conference honors for the first time, while Fieler (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South HS)secured a spot on the second team for the second consecutive year. FGCU is the only team in the league to have two first-team selections as the Eagles placed two players on the first team for first time in program history.

Furthermore, Comer and Thompson are just the second and third players in FGCU history to be named to the first team as Sherwood Brown became the initial member last season.

“I’m extremely pleased and happy for Brett, Bernard and Chase,” head coach Joe Dooley said. “All three are rightfully deserving of being recognized and it’s a testament to all the hard work they’ve put in all year long.”

Comer averaged 13.9 points per game in A-Sun action while passing out the second-most assists in conference games, averaging 5.2. On the year, the guard averaged 14.2 points per game to rank 8th in the A-Sun, one of three FGCU players to rank in the top-10 in overall scoring. He finished second in the league in assists for the season with 166, coming out to an average of 5.4 per game, just .1 behind leader Player of the Year Langston Hall (5.5).

The 2013 A-Sun Tournament MVP ranks among the league leaders in scoring increase as he has bumped his scoring average by 6.2, from 8.0 last year to 14.2 so far this year through 31 games. Twenty-three of his 50 career double-figure scoring games have occurred this year, and he’s led the Eagles in assists 25 times on the campaign.

After making just 24 3-pointers in his first two seasons combined, Comer has knocked down 36 this year alone and ranks 7th in conference games in percentage, connecting at a 41.9-percent clip in league games (26-62). Comer is one of three current 1,000-point scorers (1,025) who start for FGCU, as the Eagles are one of only eight teams nationally which can make that claim.

Thompson finished fourth in the A-Sun in league-only games by averaging 15.6 points per game. Thompson, the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year, had 32 steals in 18 conference games for an average of 1.8 per game to rank 2nd in the A-Sun in that category after having only eight steals in non-conference play as he played through an ankle injury. The 6-3 guard finished 9th in the league in free-throw percentage in A-Sun action, connecting at a 79.8-percent clip.

On the year he led FGCU and ranked 5th in the A-Sun in scoring at 15.1 points per game. Five of his 11 multi-steal games on the year came in the final eight contests. He set FGCU’s Division-I record for points in a game with 32 at USF in December, making a D-I program-record-tying 13 shots. Thompson ranks 2nd on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,335 career points, just more than 30 shy of overtaking the mark of 1,367 held by 2005 graduate Ryan Hopkins.

Fieler, who was the Preseason Fan-Voted Player of the Year, averaged 13.9 points per game in league action and finished second in the conference in A-Sun games in rebounding at 7.8 per game. For the year, he finished 2nd on the FGCU roster and 9th in the A-Sun by averaging 13.8 points game. He led the Eagles in rebounding for the whole year and tied for 2nd in the league at 7.4.

The 6-8 forward connected at better than a 50-percent clip from the field in A-Sun games, finishing 8th in the league in that category at 52.2 percent (94-180). Six of his eight career double-doubles have occurred this year, including five of his eight career 20-point games and nine of his 12 career double-figure rebounding contests.

Fieler owns the FGCU all-time rebounding record with 683, nearly 100 more than his closest competition. He became the first player in FGCU history to score 30 points in a Division-I game when he netted that exact amount in November against Hartford. With 1,246 career points, Fieler ranks 3rd all-time in the FGCU record book.

FGCU (20-11, 14-4 A-Sun) won 20 games for the second straight year and finished the season with the most conference wins in program history. The Eagles locked up the No. 1 seed in this week’s A-Sun Championship, which gets underway on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN3 when the Green and Blue hosts No. 8 Stetson. With a win, FGCU would also host a semifinal matchup on Thursday, Mar. 6, at 6:30 p.m. on CSS. With a victory in that game, FGCU would host the championship final on ESPN2 at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 9.

Tickets to all three games are now available by visiting the Alico Arena Ticket Office or by calling 239-590-7145. Student tickets are free, courtesy of FGCU picking up the $5 charge. All other prices vary, and ticket information can be found on FGCUAthletics.com. For Tuesday’s game, only a few hundred tickets (including standing-room-only) remain.
