McCollum named Lou Henson Award Candidate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men’s basketball junior C.J. McCollum has been named a candidate for the prestigious Lou Henson Award. He is one of 25 student-athletes competing for the honor as the NCAA’s top mid-major player. McCollum and Bucknell’s Mike Muscala represent the Patriot League on the list. Fan voting is underway and will continue through Monday, March 12.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005, he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
Fan voting presented by POINT 3 counts for one-third of the criteria in selecting the Lou Henson Award winner. A Collegeinsider.com Selection Committee will make up the remaining two-thirds. The winner of the 2012 Lou Henson Award will be announced on March 30 in New Orleans, site of the NCAA men’s basketball championship. Butler’s Matt Howard was the recipient of the 2011 award.

McCollum has continued to shine as one of the nation’s top players. The nation’s leading returning scorer, he is currently seventh nationally with his 21.5 scoring average and 10th with 2.6 steals per game. He’s also averaging 6.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists, both among the top five in the Patriot League.
The Canton, Ohio native is rapidly approaching 2,000 career points (currently at 1,909). He’d become only the third player in school history to reach that plateau and fourth in league history. He is already only 316 points away from breaking the Patriot League record for career points (2,224).
Lehigh rounds out regular season play with a pair of road games this week. The Mountain Hawks travels to Navy Wednesday (7 p.m.) before heading to Army on Saturday (4 p.m.).
