Son of welder, afterthought coach have Bonnies on upward arc
It’s only fitting that the son of a retired welder has become the face of what is no longer regarded as a laughingstock St. Bonaventure program.
It was nearly a decade ago when the Bonnies began their descent into the A-10 abyss following an eligibility scandal in which former player Jamil Terrell was admitted from a junior college with a welding certificate instead of an associate’s degree.
“We never talk about it,” said St. Bonaventure star forward Andrew Nicholson. “No one does.”
“It’s water under the bridge,” added Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt.

Cue the theme music to Rocky. The Bonnies are getting stronger.

Isaiah Armwood joins GW
WASHINGTON – Baltimore native Isaiah Armwood is the newest member of the George Washington University men’s basketball team. The 6-foot-9 forward has transferred to GW after playing two seasons at Villanova from 2009-11. Armwood will have two years of eligibility remaining with GW after fulfilling NCAA transfer requirements during the 2011-12 season.
UD sophomores ready to return
Devin Oliver probably would have been fine skipping the visit to the Eiffel Tower or other top tourist attractions, but the hardest part about staying in the U.S. during the University of Dayton basketball team’s trip overseas was missing out on the competition.
The sophomore wing was diagnosed with mononucleosis about a week before the Aug. 8 departure. And while his teammates were busy preparing for the tour, Oliver was bed-ridden and taking medicine to reduce the swelling in his neck.
Top Muskie Mack unwinds on Twitter
For us now it’s obviously early on, but as we’ve gone through our first workouts it’s been very apparent that there’s a real maturity with all the new guys. They all have different personalities but so far they are extremely driven and really focused.
Both Dee Davis and Dez Wells have asked if they can do extra work. It’s been a pleasant surprise because it is such a transition from high school to college.
XU’s schedule appears rugged
CINCINNATI — On paper at least, Xavier’s men’s basketball team is about to play its toughest schedule yet.
The Musketeers’ slate, released Tuesday, features 20 potential foes that competed in postseason tournaments last season, including 11 that made the NCAA Tournament. And the Musketeers don’t wait long to run the gauntlet.
Connecticut’s Brown picks La Salle
Rohan Brown became the fourth member of the La Salle men’s basketball team’s incoming recruiting class.
The 6-foot-6 forward, who is a product of East Catholic High in Manchester, Conn., enrolled at La Salle Tuesday. He averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds last season.
When your team has lost 20 games in consecutive seasons, you look for an edge. And when two of your Big 5 opponents, teams you have not be able to beat in recent seasons, always play their home games against you on their campus, you decide to change your philosophy.
For the first time since the Big 5 was formed, Saint Joseph’s will play its game with Villanova on its campus at Hagan Arena. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 17. The date has not been set, but St. Joe’s also will play Temple at Hagan this season.
The year Jamar Briscoesat out after transferring to Charlotte from North Carolina Central was an excruciatingly long one.
The Cardinal Gibbons grad and 2008 Baltimore Sun second-team All-Metro selection was the second-leading freshman scorer in the country at NCCU. Briscoe was confident he could play at a higher level, and the 49ers – members of the Atlantic 10 – provided that opportunity. While nervousness had rarely been an issue for the former Crusaders star before, Briscoe’s long-awaited Charlotte debut stirred up that unfamiliar feeling.
Dunphy makes the underrated list
Maybe the best human being in collegiate athletics, Dunphy has all the pieces in place to post his fifth 20-win season in six years at Temple. The Philadelphia native came to the Atlantic-10 school after spending 17 years at nearby Penn, where he earned nine NCAA Tournament bids. Look for the Owls to have one of college basketball’s top backcourts, headlined by point guard Juan Fernandez.
