Wow … we can’t just ease into the weekend after gobbling up all the turkey and stuffing. Nope, on Friday college football fans are gonna be clobbered with some high stakes games … playoff games, if you will … in this current system we have. Hold on, here we go.

An 8-game winning streak brought the 8th ranked, 8-2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish coached by Dan Devine to Los Angeles for their annual showdown with the Southern Cal Trojans of coach John Robinson who stood at 9-1, ranked 3rd nationally. Southern Cal dominated the first three quarters behind All-American RB Charles White’s 205 yards rushing but had to get a field goal from PK Frank Jordan with 0:02 to play to retain The Belt with a 27-25 victory.

For the 2nd time, the Territorial Cup battle also featured The Belt as the 5-5 Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey faced the 6-4 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Bruce Snyder. Arizona’s QB Dan White threw 3 touchdown passes as the Wildcats overcame 4 turnovers to rally from 14 points behind in the last 7 minutes & PK Jonathan Prasuhn hit a 36-yard field goal with 0:22 left to claim The Belt with a 31-28 victory.

Canisius might be best measured by its bench which outscores the opposing pine 80-48. Senior, Greg Logins knocks down 10 a game including 5-16 from behind the arc. Reggie Groves and Alshwan Hymes keyed a 10-0 run against EMU. Hymes averages eight a game and hits 42.9 percent from behind the arc.

The top-ranked, 10-1 Louisiana State Tigers with coach Les Miles welcomed the 7-4 Arkansas Razorbacks of coach Houston Nutt to Baton Rouge. Arkansas had missed their chance to claim The Belt earlier this season when they lost at home to Auburn & most expected the top-ranked Tigers to successfully defend the title at home before moving to the SEC Championship game. The teams traded scores throughout the game & eventually went to triple-overtime before Arkansas’ CB Matterral Richardson intercepted a 2-point conversion pass attempt to save a 50-48 Razorbacks win to claim their first Belt reign in the second highest scoring game to date in Belt history.
