Some very intriguing college football games coming up tonight and this weekend. To name a few:

    Pittsburgh at Utah

    USC at Hawaii

    UConn at Michigan

    Purdue at Notre Dame

    BYU at Washington

    No. Carolina at LSU

Boise State at Va Tech (Monday)

This last game on Labor Day certainly has national title/ranking implications for both team who are ranked in the Top 10. Boise State MUST win this game and go undefeated to have a shot at the Nat’l title.

As I’ve been saying all along, Notre Dame has A LOT of talent on it’s roster, and quality coaching has been the real problem over the past several seasons. How much talent do they currently have compared to other programs? Take a look at this article below:

Star power is hardly the Irish’s problem

An interesting tidbit from the Wall Street Journal and their popular blog “The Count” today shows that Notre Dame’s problem has hardly been recruiting rankings. For those that followed the Charlie Weis era closely that’s hardly a surprise, but what is surprising is the esteem Notre Dame’s projected starters are held in, ranking third-highest in the nation behind USC and Florida.

    From The Count:
Heading into the 2010 season, which begins next week, USC’s projected starters average 4.27 stars on the recruiting system at Rivals.com, a website that ranks high-school athletes in terms of talent by awarding them stars, ranging between two and five. That 4.27 mark is tied with the University of Florida atop major college-football in terms of the teams’ projected starters in Phil Steele’s annual College Football Preview. Notre Dame is ranked third in the country at 4.09 and Texas, Alabama and LSU are tied for fourth at 3.91.

So, hopefully, the new coaching staff led by Brian Kelly will perform at a level that matches the talent on the Irish roster … starting Saturday!!! The Irish are favored by 10 or 11 over visiting Purdue … they better bring home a W ;)

Say, do baseball players not know how to throw a punch? I saw the brawl last night, and it all looked more like a cat fight from an 80′s movie. I ain’t no Ali myself, but I imagine I could rear back and slug someone, not just go all slappy like the clip showed. I do give kudos though, to Sanchez, for clotheslining Morgan. I bet he still feels that today.

So BYU is bucking the trend and becoming an independent. What … are they trying to become “God’s Other Team”? The Mormon version of ND? Of course, ND is helping out by putting them on the schedule for several games in the near future. I suppose these two could be natural rivals. They’ve also booked some games with Texas, if I’m not mistaken. And is Texas the next one to jump to independence?

Anyway, does the BYU brand have the clout to pull this off? Apparently, their administration thinks so. Anyone got an opinion or other data to share on this surprising move? Is there a lucrative TV package involved?

Props to the Versus for picking up the Pitt-Utah game game tonight. Should be an interesting match up.

That clothesline was nuh, nuh, NASTY. But you are right not one punch connected.

How brainless is Morgan. He goes running out to the mound and basically falls on the ground. Here I am guys. C’mon and pile on me.

Sounds more like a radio station then it does the mph on a Aroldis Chapman fastball.

Sitting 10 miles from ND campus right now, extremely excited about being able to bring my grandsons to campus on saturday to be part of the beginning of The Brian Kelly Era! I’m still expecting big things, and that talent assessment does not hurt!

  9. WallySeptember 3rd, 2010 - 10:06 am

Have fun, Pete. Wish I could go, too. Many of us are hoping (even praying) that Brian Kelly will return the “onward to victory” part of the gameday experience to where it once was. Enjoy it with your grandsons … win or lose, it’s always special to be on campus. I’ll be watching ;)

Wow – no comments on the ND game yet?

I thought the game was what I expected. Brian Kelly is obviously a good coach. All facets of the game had their bright spots, and that’s the sign of a good coach in football to me. Special teams looked awesome. I thought the offense was fluid all except for the QB’s decision making. Not passing the ball but with the option. It seemed like there were a couple of plays where he wanted to give and should have kept, and then vice-versa. But that comes with experience in that type of system.

I think most impressive was the blocking by the receivers. Running the spread, you are basically outnumbered on the catch. They always had a secondary block prepared and the receivers held them nicely. #3 did this really well. He should get a lot of assists on some YAC if such a stat existed.

I know. C’mon Wally! We’re all waiting with baited breath.

See the separate post, guys … sorry for the “delay” . Rey … big win for Temple!

You know what would be cool to do here on the ‘The Pine?’ Some kind of reader collage on the greatest MSG moments fused between music and sports. Is there a venue out there that can even come close to the performances and their immensity given in the Garden? And not to forget the original Garden where some of the great boxing matches have occurred. For every amazing feat on the basketball court, it could be matched with a memorable musical performance. And, hey – ten times better if anyone actually witnessed any of them! I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting the Garden yet. Anyway – consider one of the best performances I can conjure up in terms of music:

Rey – GREAT idea. I am embarrassed to admit that I have NEVER seen an event in MSG. While the Knicks still suck I should make a point to get down there.
