Okay loyal readers, here is your chance to get the discussion going. Let us know what is on your mind. Today is a great day for the Pine!
It consists of two teams, 24 golfers and 3 days of spectacular golf. The tournament has been held every other year for the past 83 years, stopping only for a World War and the September 11th terrorist attacks. It is the Ryder Cup. The tournament features the United States against most of Europe, with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.
The top-ranked, 3-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach John Robinson traveled to Baton Rouge to take on the 20th ranked, 2-0 Louisiana State Tigers of Charlie McClendon. Southern Cal’s Heisman Trophy winning, All-American RB Charles White rushed for 185 yards with a touchdown & All-Pac 10 QB Paul McDonald found WR Kevin Williams with 0:32 left in the game as the Trojans retained The Belt with a 17-12 victory.
I stayed in the 315 when I went to college. Not many D1 baseball schools in Upstate New York, but I found one. We had a funny nickname for a landlocked place. There aren’t many dolphins in Onondaga Lake. I was teammates at that college with a guy who went on to pitch a perfect game for the Reds in ’88.
Vincent Jackson might not like the contract offered. Maybe a $3+ million contract is not on par with a receiver that ranks in the top ten of some statistical categories. An NFL lockout looms. A.J. Smith knows Jackson chances to bargain are dwindling.
The 0-1-1 Purdue Boilermakers of coach Alex Agase seemed unlikely to threaten the Belt reign of the 2-0 Notre Dame Fighting Irish of coach Ara Parseghian. Coming off a loss to Wisconsin & a tie with Miami (OH), the Boilermakers were 28-point underdogs to the 2nd ranked, defending National Champions. Purdue scored 24 points in the 1st quarter, including a 52-yard touchdown run by RB Pete Gross, on their way to a stunning 31-20 win ending the 7-game Belt reign of Notre Dame while claiming both The Belt & the Shillelagh Trophy.
This week was full of divisional rivalries, and tonight is no different. Check out what happened on Sunday, then sit back and watch two NFC North opponents battle to stay undefeated.
It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.
The Air Force Falcons of coach Ben Martin had their second title shot having lost at Notre Dame in 1973. Air Force came to their first home game with a 0-2 record while the UCLA Bruins were 2-0 under Dick Vermeil. The Falcons appeared to present little problem to the Pac-8 power but UCLA may have been looking ahead to a match-up with Big Ten power Ohio State the following week. UCLA’s All-American QB John Sciarra threw 3 interceptions including 1 returned for an Air Force touchdown but RB Wendell Tyler rushed for 142 yards & the Bruins retained The Belt with a 20-20 tie with the Falcons. Air Force could not claim the title since they did not defeat the champion (“To Be The Man, You Have To Beat The Man”).
It might be time to get familiar with the head coach of the Temple Owls. In his fifth year at the helm, Al Golden continues building momentum with the Owls. Last year, Temple recorded its first winning season (9-4) since 1991 and the school’s first bowl appearance in 30 years. Temple is off to a 3-1 start this year including a 30-16 beat down of last year’s Big East champion, UConn, 30-16. Yesterday, Temple held the Penn State Nittany Lions without a touchdown for 55 minutes before losing their first tilt of the season, 22-13.
