It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.
Cincinnati’s Jay Bruce grabs my POTW. Bruce got himself mentioned with the likes of Pete Rose and Davey Lopes.
The Reds leadoff batter homered in three consecutive at bats and drove in five as Cincinnati clobbered the Cubs, 7-1. It was the first time Bruce batted in the leadoff spot in two years, and he needed just five pitches for the trifecta.
Pete Rose was the last Red to hit three round trippers from the top of the order. Rose accomplished the feat on April 29, 1978. Former Los Angeles Dodger, Davey Lopes, was the last to go yard three times from the leadoff spot against the Cubs. Lopes hit his trifecta August 20, 1974. Thanks to ESPN for the previous information.
Who gets your POTW?
Speaking of the Reds, which is a GREAT story, we can now put a fork in the Cardinals … they’re done. “My pesky Astros” just swept ‘em. It’s just really hard to believe the Reds are running away with the division. The Cards have just collapsed. Wow.
Now … if only the Yankmees would fall like a house of cards … or like the Cards.
I’m starting the “Paul Konerko for MVP” campaign. He had another huge hit today … a late inning 3 run HR to turn a deficit into a lead vs the Tribe. Palehose won and keep the heat on the Twins. Konerko’s stats: .319 BA, 33 HR, 98 RBI. And I can tell you he’s been very clutch … not the ARod variety 9th inning during a 10-2 drubbing.
