Florida State vs Brigham Young
The 2nd ranked Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden defended The Belt in Jacksonville at the Pigskin Classic against the Brigham Young Cougars with coach Lavell Edwards. The Seminoles’ defense was never challenged as they held the Cougars to a 42-yard field goal from All-MWC PK Owen Pochman. The kick preserved the Cougars streak of 313 consecutive games without being shutout but the Seminoles won 29-3. Florida State had plenty of offense left from their National Championship team. Heisman Trophy winning, All-ACC QB Chris Weinke threw for 318 yards with a touchdown but the real story of this game was the Seminoles’ defense led by All-American DE Jamal Reynolds who recorded a safety & 2 sacks. The Cougars were held to –2 yards rushing in 24 attempts, lost 1 fumble, had 3 passes intercepted & allowed a safety. Seminoles’ WR Atrews Bell scored on 3-yard pass from Weinke in the 1st quarter & on a 6-yard double reverse in the 2nd quarter. Florida State’s other scores came on a 19-yard pass from Weinke to WR Javon Walker in the opening quarter & a 5-yard touchdown run from RB Travis Minor in the final period. Florida State’s All-American WR Marvin “Snoop” Minnis had 9 catches for 137 yards, & Walker had 8 catches for 70 yards with a touchdown for the Seminoles. Brigham Young’s QB Bret Engemann threw for 139 yards but 2 interceptions in the loss. Florida State finished the season 11-2; ACC Champions, ranked 5th nationally while the Cougars finished 6-6 in Edwards final season. Brigham Young would play for The Belt again in 2004.
Though he’s not a favorite of Wally’s, you have to admire Bowden for his ability to turn out championship caliber college teams with players who never amounted to much in the NFL. Do they still play the Pigskin Classic? It sure got college football off to an early start!
Correctomondo, Pete … absolutely right … Boobie “Bumfuzzled” Bowden is one of my CFB whipping boys. During the last 15 years especially, to me he represented what is wrong with college sports, the compliance problems, and the football factory mentality. He’s a guy who charmed the pants off the media, but looked the other way when it came to rules, ethics and education. When FSU had potential or real rules infractions or his players got in trouble, this guy would feign ignorance. “I didn’t know that was a rule” … “I had no idea what they were doing” … “I’m bumfuzzled about this”… “Aw shucks”. And I’d be willing to bet that a very high percentage of his recruits were academic misfits. Why should a player be able to read at better than a 6th grade level if his head coach wouldn’t know a book if it hit him in the head??
