It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.
Louis Oosthuizen grabs my POTW.
As the saying goes: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
While other golfers succeeded early in fair weather conditions, Oosthuizen won the 2010 British Open at St. Andrew’s when the weather was its harshest.
This coming from a guy who had just once before made the cut in a Major, and that was a dead last finish in the 2008 PGA Chamionship.
Thursday saw the golfers tame St. Andrew’s. Fair skies and light breezes brought low scores.
The rest of the weekend was different. St. Andrew’s was its usual harsh self with a variety of weather systems, and gusts carrying balls here and there.
That was when Oosthuizen was at his best finishing 16 under par to win the claret jug by 7 strokes.
Who gets your POTW?
I’ll give it to Johan Santana for not putting a luger up to his skull and pulling the trigger. Once again he pitches a fine game, once again a no-decision. I am having trouble finding the exact stats, but he has pitched 15 consecutive scoreless innings, and over that period his era is a ridiculous .74 or so. If the rest of the team isn’t going to score, the least they can do is start leaning into pitches, because getting hit would put them on the bases, and then things could happen.
As for that British Golfing contest, I don’t get how everybody says the courses are so much more lethal over there, and a guy from nowhere shoots 16 under.
Hard to argue against Oosthuizen. Anyone who can win the British Open by essentially lapping the field (e.g. winning by 7 strokes) deserves the POTW. How is it possible for one guy … an unknown … to separate himself from the field of the world’s best golfers like that??? The answer is: He must have been truly EXCEPTIONAL for the entire 4 rounds.
I say check him for steroids. Something is fishy.
I give it to MJ for finally breaking his silence on the Miami Superfriends situation even though I felt someone should have said something when the issue of a free agent summit first leaked. Nonetheless the fact that he is talking some sense into anybody is deserving of the player of the week for me.
Oh and yes Bill, at this time I say check them all for steroids.
Bill – I thought you would nominate Santana last week when he pitched the complete game shutout AND hit a home run.
Serves him right. Take all the money and get a heap of frustration.
Just checking – does Genny Ice contain steroids?
Gino – great call!
Well, Casey, I should have, but I am still in shock over that. And while I can’t say if Genny has steroids, if Labatt’s blue light did, I’d be able to toss pianos around like popcorn. So no doubt there, it’s not loaded.
I tell you Gino, when I first saw Daly’s name atop the leaderboard on Thursday, I almost spit out whatever was in my mouth. Daly? Really? I had to check a calendar to make sure what year it was, and that I wasn’t having any sort of acid flashbacks or anything weird like that.
Although it was nice seeing the clip of Tiger with the eff bombs. http://www.thedailybeast.com/video/item/tiger-woods-swears-at-british-open/
I used to root against Tiger because I never wanted to see anyone break Jack Nicklaus’s record for majors. Things have changed so much and Tiger has become “so ordinary” that I’m almost rooting for him to win one. Okay, to be honest, I’m actually rooting for him to contend in majors and then lose on Sunday. Seeing Tiger perfectly frustrated is perfect theatre now. I hope he never wins another major … but finishes in 2nd EVERY TIME.
Mine this week goes to Lauren Jackson of the Seattle Storm. She had 30+ points and 18 boards in a triple OT game versus the Mercury. The Australian hit two big free throws to send the game into its third OT (I think) while Seattle overcame 44 points by Diana Taurasi. Seattle looks like they’re dominating the WNBA this season with a record of 18-2.
Now that my man card has been revoked, excuse me while I go scrapbook and watch Gilmore Girls.
Gino – good call. MJ has said a few things lately that have been unlike him. He was recently asked (by a little kid) at a camp who was better, LeBrone or Kobe and he quickly answered Kobe. That was cheered! My how times have changed since the Colorado incident.
Wally – right there with you on Tiger. I hope he finishes in 2nd every time and surrenders leads so we no longer have to hear, “Tiger has never lost a major when leading going into Sunday.” Tiger’s image has just been throttled. I read today that his video game, which has been pretty freakin’ popular the past several years for a golfing video game, has seen a 68% drop in sales.
This one will be long, so I apologize to anybody who reads it, I am drunk at this time, that’s my excuse. I know I should have just gone for an article, but my editor would have left a bunch of it out since my thoughts are a little scattered.
Rey,
I’m not one to have hoop thoughts, but why not. You know how people will forget about Lindsey Lohan’s incident next time she makes a blockbuster movie, same thing happened when Kobe finally won without Shaq. If you think I’m joking look at Robert Downey Jr, he did something at some point, but now all I remember is that he’s Iron man (seriously what was he in trouble for?). Letterman is still cruising along, and I’m sure Steve Phillips will get a job soon. Oh and this superfriends crap, just makes Kobe look that ,much better.
Let me say this I looked at all the criticism from MJ’s induction speech and than I rewatched his speech (thanks youtube, and you never know how much time you have once you’re drunk). You know what, it was all in good humor, so yes they are right when they say that this is unlike MJ,cause even though Hanes is still going to sell if he did, he never came out and actually let us know his thoughts in a non-humorous matter before.
I know I have to wait till next monday for this but I feel that Lou Piniella is the POTW, for the rest of the year, just cause I don’t think I can watch a cubs game after he leaves. I’m just not ready for a cubs manager to be reasonable when a call doesn’t go his way. I need close face to face yelling and dirt kicking. JR decided to leave this year and my eyes were stone dry, JR left me when he got injured during his whole tenure in Cincinatti. Piniella has brought tears to my eyes by deciding that he’s leaving. Sweet Lou for POTW for the rest of the year.
I guess I’m too tired to keep going, I know I promised a bit longer, but this will have to do for now. We love you, Sweet Lou. Yes I’m a fan!!!!!
Rey,
WNBA ? Really ? It threatens my masculinity. It brings out all my hidden insecurities. I can’t handle it.
Casey,
Too bad you feel the need to edit my posts…No more “pickinsplinters” for me. The four of you “pine riders” can discuss WNBA, golf,Tusculum and Flagler…Looking forward to the crying this fall after USC pummels the Irish in So.Cal….Again !
Good thing I didn’t nominate Jennie Finch for her great softball career since she announced her retirement this week. Anyway – I have to go. The senior LPGA tour is on the Golf Channel right now.
