Thank you sir. May I have another!

It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.

Bryant Guilmette of the Webster Yankees grabs my POTW.

The Hopkinton, Mass. native needed 100 pitches for a complete game shutout of the Geneva Red Wings in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Basket Road Field in Webster. Guilmette struck out just one while tossing 71 strikes for his first victory of the season.

Guilmette took the loss in the season opener when he went the distance and lost 2-0. Twelve days later, he got a no decision after leaving in the ninth inning of a scoreless tie.

The southpaw’s afternoon finished with a pie of shaving cream.

Gulimette earned a POTW last summer when the lefty made three relief appearances in a week and allowed zero earned runs while striking out five and earning two saves . In his first appearance of the summer, he struck out the side on nine consecutive strikes. One night later, with the pinstripes clinging to a 1-0 lead, Guilmette entered the game with bases loaded and one out. Two pitches later, Guilmette extinguished the threat with an inning-ending double play. To round off his week, the southpaw came out of the pen with bases loaded and one out. The first batter Guilmette faced flew to left field. The next popped up to third base.

Who gets your POTW?

Had the White Sox completed the sweep of the Cubs to push their winning streak to 12, they would’ve gotten my POTW hands down, Unfortunately, it didn’t happen, but the Palehose are now back in the thick of it … only 1.5 games behind the Twins.

Instead, I’ve got to hand my POTW award to fellow “geezer”, Jamie Moyer, the well-traveled 47 year old left hander. I kinda mark the passage of time in my own life by looking over at what Moyer is doing. We’re about the same age, he’s been doing what I wanted to do for the last 22+ years, he’s also got a “big family”, and his wife Karen was a college classmate of mine and my wife Molly. So I’ve been living vicariously through Moyer for a couple decades … he even started his career in Chicago, just like you know who. Yesterday, Moyer threw his third excellent game in a row, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings to earn his 9th win of the season. He also achieved a couple notable career milestones in this game vs the BlueJays: 4,000 innings pitched and he gave up the record-setting 506th home run. Moyer is the 40th pitcher in history to log 4,000 innings and he now ranks 35th on the all-time wins list with 267 (one behind Jim Palmer). No, I’m not making a case for Moyer to be in the Hall of Fame. I’m just pointing out that the “old man” is still getting it done. Way to go, Jamie!
