Ron Artest grabs my POTW.

It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.

The oft-maligned Los Angeles Laker forward stepped up when his team needed him the most. With the Boston Celtics focusing on the Lakers leading scorer, Artest dropped 20 and none bigger than  his 3 with 1:00 remaining to give Los Angeles a six-point lead and the eventual NBA title. Artest averaged 11 points during the season.

At the same time, Artest held Boston’s Paul Pierce to 18 points in deciding game.

With emotions swirling, Artest managed to have fun during his post-game comments: “Kobe passed me the ball…“Don’t shoot Ron. Don’t shoot. Whatever. POW!”

Who gets your POTW?

A few MLB teams are in the middle of nice winning streaks. Atlanta has won 5 in a row. Boston and the WhiteSox have each reeled off 6 straight wins, with Boston essentially catching the AL East front-runners. But no team has been hotter than the Texas Rangers who have now won 8 straight and 9 of 10 …. they are now leading the AL West by 3.5 games. The Ranger have always seemed to hit the ball well, and this year is no exception as they are 4th in the AL in runs scored. But for once they are firmly in the top half of the league in pitching … tied for 5th with Seattle for team ERA at 3.97. And they are #1 in the AL for opponents batting average. Apparently, Nolan Ryan’s influence with the organization’s pitching staff is starting to pay dividends. All this without the presence of a real stud ace or any recognizable names. Colby Lewis and CJ Wilson lead the starters and Neftali Feliz sports 19 saves. Who are these guys??? That’s what the rest of the AL is wondering.

I have to give it to the Mets, just for beating up so much on the Yankees.

I’ll give it to the ref who was in charge of the US/Slovakia game. I don’t know what he saw when the US potentially won the game, but he must have eyes like a hawk to see something in that mess. I know I slowed down the replays and saw nothing, but then again, I ain’t qualified to be a ref.

I had no idea you like being a pinata.

Listen Casey, I’ve taken so many shots to the frank and beans from the kids, I don’t even notice the hits anymore. Add to that being a Mets fan, and a Rangers fan, and you can see I love to suffer.

    Bill,

I couldn’t agree with you more. I was sitting here thinking about nominating Graeme McDowell who should be cheered for being the only golfer (or as Bill Murray says, “The Gophers”) to make it out off Pebble Beach alive. Watching the U.S. Open was like watching an episode of Lost go horribly wrong.

But I didn’t think I would ever see the increase in the game of soccer like I have over the last 3 days. And who knew that one man would ultimately be responsible for the rise like Koman Coulibaly has been? For someone to give soccer relevance in America and do it almost single handedly – well, that is one hell of a performance. It is just too bad that it had to cast such a negative light on the game.

Lost in the Koman-mania has been the performance of the U.S. Men’s Wold Cup soccer team in the second half of the game against Slovenia. That was some of the best soccer I have seen the U.S. team play in a long time. Landon Donovan was dominate and yes – they did achieve the greatest comeback in World Cup History – that never happened.

Where is Al Michael or Vin Scully when you need them?

Yeah Smitty, you know, soccer has such an uphill road here, and it’s still going, and maybe in 20 years it will be more popular, but that ref blowing the call for whatever reason, maybe he was not trained well enough, maybe he’d been told something from higher ups, whatever, it was almost like watching a NHL game and seeing Cindy Crosby getting a pass for diving. I don’t know if he apologized or whatever, but it was pretty sad. No call made, heck, I still don’t even know what the call was, does anyone?
