It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.

Ray Allen gets my POTW.

It should be enough that Allen set an NBA Finals record with eight three pointers in game. But it’s more than just those 24 points. The way Allen goes about his work is nothing short of …is it magic? Is it poetry in motion? Is it the human spirit of competition at its finest?

Whatever it is, Ray Allen is THE shooting guard. Oh yeah, there are many who play the two guard who do more. Kobe Bryant plays the 2. I know. I know. It’s just that Ray Allen is a SHOOTING guard. His teammates need him to open the floor, and Allen delivers.

Allen finished with a game high 32 on 11-20 shooting including 8-11 from behind the line. It was kind of laughable how the Staples Center crowd gave Allen the “air ball” taunt at one point. For the love of GOD!  Go back to eating your cheese and sipping your wine. The shot clock was running down, and he let go with an off-balance shot.

Allen added two assists and three rebounds. Beyond that, he held Kobe to 21 on 8-20 shooting.

Oh yeah, and Allen did all this in Kobe’s barn.

Who gets your POTW?

    Casey –
I couldn’t have said it better than you did about Ray Allen … the best pure shooter of his generation … and possibly THE BEST of all-time. And a classy pro to boot.

So since you picked Allen, I’ll nominate my second pick: Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers, who threw the “not quite perfect game” early last week. I’m nominating Galarraga for his display of sportsmanship as much as for the great athletic feat he accomplished on the field.

I second BOTH choices! I wish I could have been nominating downtowncharlybrown, but alas, not to be.

I am going with Rafael Nadal. The guy didn’t lose a set… A SET in the entire French Open Tournament. That is pure domination and is more than worthy of taking over the Number 1 spot in tennis..

Can someone explain to me why the NBA had to have that game on Sunday night? Why not Saturday? Instead I have to choose between the Stanley Cup and the NBA Finals. Now they fly back across country and they have a less than 48 turn around? Huh? Two games in LA – 3 days in between. Two games and fly 3,000 miles – less than 48 hours. Does this make sense to anyone else?

Great question, Smitty. Somehow, the answer involves “they make more money that way”. These networks have studied how to maximize ratings … we know the NBA has gotten pretty good at that.

Many of the folks on the bench here are atypical of the norm … we like basketball AND hockey. In the US, there are TONS more NBA fans than NHL fans … which begs the question I really want to ask: How did the NHL have the nerve to match up directly with the NBA (Celtics-Lakers no less) on Sunday evening primetime???? It seems to me that the NHL woulda been smarter to either broadcast Sat night or taken an earlier slot Sunday instead of competing head-to-head with Celtics-Lakers.

And I woulda been in absolute sports heaven if Sunday’s hockey game started ~3 hours before the hoops game. As it was, I was flipping furiously between both, but I gave preference to my Blackhawks.

I’ll give my POTW to Garrett Wittles (sp?). He ended the season with a 56-game hitting streak. Unfortunately, his Florida International team was eliminated and he’ll have to wait for next season to try and break Robin Ventura’s record of 58 games.

Here’s a question for you, would it have been Galaraga, if Jim Joyce made the correct call?

  7. CaseyJune 8th, 2010 - 12:58 pm

I’ll take it that question was for me. The answer is no. Allen’s performance was outstanding.

  8. SmittyJune 8th, 2010 - 11:13 pm

Casey, I’ll second that.. Nothing to take away from Galarraga but in my mind Ray Allen and Rafael Nadal were better.

Wally – I thought the NBA FInal could have easily been on Saturday night. In all fairness to the NHL, they had been sticking to a every other night format – the NBA’s rotation doesn’t make any sense.. In the end, it is all money driven – which is why I deferred to the Stanley Cup on Sunday.

I too watched the Cup. Only wish for once I had a Nielsen box on my TV!
