I just saw this caption in relation to Notre Dame football: shotgun spread offense. How do the loyal Irish fans and alum feel about Brian Kelly’s best Rich Rod impersonation? I’m all for doing whatever style works best for you and your team, but what got me is Rich Rod going to that system right away without the right personnel. Does Kelly have the type of personnel there to spread the field? It sounds like to me he has some true passers at the QB position. Don’t know; lets hear it…

Brian Kelly is not Rich Rod … Kelly has a brain.

Seriously … haven’t been following it closely enough to comment, but the incumbent and likely starting QB, Dayne Crist, is a pure pocket passer, very highly sought after and played at same HS as Jimmy Clausen, I believe.

Dayne Crist strikes me more as a Tim Tebow, and I don’t think there are very many coaches better at using a system that fits the personnel than Brian Kelly. Hence I continue to remain very optimistic

    Pete –
You really look at Crist as a runner??? I’m just not seeing that. He’s probably 6’4″ … taller than Clausen … and the only game he really played last year was in San Antonio vs Wash State. He thru some pretty nice medium-long range passes in that one before getting hurt (while running). I think you can run the spread with any QB … it just helps to have a QB who can run well.

Cinci’s QB last year, Tony Pike, only rushed for 91 yards in 31 attempts … I’m sure some of those were pure scrambles to get away from the pass rush. But it certainly doesn’t look like Kelly relied on his QB’s running ability. Cinci averaged 36 passes per game last season. The team’s overall QB rating was an extremely good 161. They also averaged 5 yds/carry on 28 rushes per game.

My bad, Wally. You’re right in that a spread shotgun does not have to entail a running QB. Kelly and Pike at Cincy had great success spreading the field and passing. I cringe when I hear shotgun and spread because you have to have the superior players/athletes to do this. It’s successful at Florida because they always have the fastest WRs bar none. I just don’t see Michigan or Notre Dame stealing those athletes. It seems like the pound it out runners rely on places like ND and Michigan, etc. Ohio State has been successful because he has gone out and gotten the best athlete at QB the past few years in Pryor and (what was his name, #10 now on the Ravens?).

I can see the optimism because Kelly’s resume is impressive, but that type of change in system just seems like it doesn’t happen overnight. Are the Irish faithful going to give Kelly time to get the players to implement it?

Looks like Kelly’s attitude toward the Irish is improving – http://www.wndu.com/sports/headlines/90183392.html
