Maybe it’s the right time for some predictions … either on the Final Four, the upcoming MLB season, the Masters, how many Easter Eggs Smitty will find Sunday morning … whatever. Which way does the bench want to go??

  2. CaseyApril 1st, 2010 - 12:57 pm

Dayton downs North Carolina in tonight’s NIT final.

MLB? Just give the Yankees the World Series. They are that good. I mean c’mon how can any team hope to keep up with the 2010 version of The Bronx Bombers. And when it is all done, Carl Crawford signs with the pinstripes in the off-season. There, no sense in watching the season. Can we skip the summer and get back to hoops?

What? No NHL or NBA discussion?

Despite yesterday’s shutout win, the Blackhawks have been slumping lately. Hope they get their groove back … but, yes, I am worried.

I’m NOT in favor of expanding the NCAA tournament to 96 teams!!! Why change something that is already GREAT? Plus, I think the proposed changes will diminish the tourney.

Does Tim Floyd have sleazy photos of several ADs and/or NCAA officials?? How does he keep pulling this Lazarus act???

I’m hoping that a healthy Jake Peavey propels the ChiSox to the playoffs this season. Am I foolish?

Twins without Joe Nathan could be had. I have heard talk that the Twins have the best lineup in baseball?

  5. CaseyApril 1st, 2010 - 2:21 pm

96 teams seems inevitable. YOu know where I stand on that one. We will have to get used to it.

96 teams is kinda like No Child Left Behind – wait where did I hear that one?

  6. WallyApril 1st, 2010 - 4:22 pm

96 teams spells the doom of the NIT. Oh … I guess that’s the only GOOD thing about 96 teams.

Wait … I thought the Yankmees have the best lineup in baseball?

  7. CaseyApril 1st, 2010 - 7:46 pm

What was I thinking? I must have lost my head.

  8. CaseyApril 1st, 2010 - 7:47 pm

    Easy on the NIT.

  9. Mark HouserApril 1st, 2010 - 9:08 pm

    Buster Olney is insane…..Lets compare

    C:Posada<Morneau(Maybe even)
    2B:Cano>>>Hudson
    SS.Jeter>>>Hardy
    3B:A-Rod>>>>Harris
    LF:GardnerYoung
    CF:Granderson>Span(Maybe equal)
    RF:Swisher>Cuddyer
    DH: Johnson>Kubel

Yankees are better offensively at almost every position. Of course thats just my opinion but im assuming most would agree.

  10. WallyApril 1st, 2010 - 9:41 pm

    Mark –
Mauer, not Morneau, catches for Minn … big edge to Twins. Now put Morneau at DH or 1B and that’s another win for the Twins. Yanks may have the edge at 3/4 of the other positions. And a better pitching staff to boot.

  11. SmittyApril 1st, 2010 - 11:08 pm

Wally – I hope to find a couple of Easter eggs come Sunday morning.. :-)

Ahhh, it will be 80 degrees here tomorrow and I am going golfing.. Should get me ready for my annual Masters article.

As for the tourney moving to 96 teams – I hope not. I think it will hurt the tournament more then it will help.

Casey – That whole Yankees rant? I am just chalking that up to sarcasm..

Long week guys.. Wish I had more..

  12. CaseyApril 2nd, 2010 - 11:27 am

    Smitty

That qualifies as a rant? We gotta do something about your expectations. And you are not even a product of “No Child Left Behind.” What has this world come to? Less than 100 words equals a rant?

And Houser – Morneau a catcher? Even I knew that. And I made the mistake of predicting LUIS Pujols as last year’s NL MVP. Geez.

The DAYTON FLYERS!!!! 79-68 over the Tar Heels. I’m not even sure it was that close. Brian Gregory’s crew beat the Heels at their own game – running and gunning. Keep the following names in mind: Chris Wright, Chris Johnson, Paul Williams, and Devin Searcy.

Wally – eliminating the NIT would be a loss. There is a lot of history with that tournament. Many great names and great teams played in the tourney. And (like Fran Frischilla said last night) finishing the season playing at MSG is a great thing.

  14. WallyApril 2nd, 2010 - 12:26 pm

Yes … I guess eliminating the NIT would be akin to eliminating the Chik-Filet Peach Bowl …. so much tradition … how could we possibly live without it?!?!?

And what’s so great about playing in MSG??? The Knicks have been dishonoring that place for decades!!! Puh-lease!!!!

But I’m still overwhelmingly NOT in favor of expanding the NCAA tourney to 96 … even if it meant the demise of the NIT :) ESPN showed a poll last night where I think 87% of respondents were opposed to expansion. Of course, it’s all about money, and the NCAA doesn’t really care much about what fans think, since probably 87% or more would favor a true NCAA Div 1 football playoff and we’re not getting that either.

  15. CaseyApril 2nd, 2010 - 12:55 pm

    Wally

You are not an East Coast guy, and I would not expect you to understand. MSG is like Chicago Stadium prior to 1990. It is one MJ away from national prominence again. If I made a comment similar to yours about Chicago Stadium in 1985 (which by the way the 70s was not much of a decade if you want to use records as a gauge), how would you respond?

Comparing the NIT to the Peach Bowl is surprising come from you. It shows a pretty significant ignoring of history. You know as well as I that the NIT was just as important (if not more) than the NCAA Tournament in the 50s and 60s. Al McGuire’s 1970 Marquette team chose the NIT over the NCAA. I am not going to go through the history. The timing would be great if Pete showed up.

  16. WallyApril 2nd, 2010 - 3:00 pm

OK … I guess I really shoulda compared the NIT to the Cotton Bowl. At one time, both of them REALLY mattered in terms of deciding the national championship. But now and for several years, neither of them carry any significance … they’re contests for also-rans … purely exhibitions.

Pre-MJ, the old Chicago Stadium rocked primarily because of the Blackhawks … you know … guys like Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Keith Magnuson and “Tony O”. Even the Bulls had some really good teams with Artis Gilmore, Stormin’ Normin’, Jerry Sloan, et al. Anyway … okay … so MSG is an east coast shrine … still doesn’t justify playing the NIT. MSG already hosts the Big East Tournament every March … that’s probably the best event there every year … unless the Rangers happen to be Cup contenders.

  17. WallyApril 2nd, 2010 - 5:49 pm

Whoa! I just read Ken Rosenthal’s column on Foxsports … he’s picking the White Sox to win it all. Yes … win the World Series. Wow.

Well … it probably won’t happen, but at least it gives me hope they will contend. The Sox pitching staff could be brilliant, the offense is the big ?. But with Joe Nathan of Twins out for the year, the Central is there for the taking.

But seriously, if the AL pennant is not won by NY or Boston, I probably like the Mariners as a darkhorse more than my ChiSox.
