It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances.  Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.

The Cornell Big Red grabs my POTW.

It’s not just that the Big Red won the first NCAA Tournament game in school history. Or that they turned around two days later and repeated the feat. Cornell advanced to the Sweet 16 by scoring big against two of the best defensive teams in the country.

Cornell topped Temple in the tournament’s first round 78-65. The Big Red hit 27 of 48 (56 percent) shots to defeat the Owls. Louis Dale led the way with 26 points. Ryan Wittman and Jeff Foote added 24 and 12 respectively. The three shot a combined 19 of 31, including 7 of 13 from behind the arc.

Temple entered play holding opponents to less than 57 points on 38 percent shooting.

Fans would have understood had Cornell rested on its accomplishments, but the Big Red followed with an encore as good as the show.

Dale went for 26. Wittman added 24, and Foote chipped in 12 as Cornell tripped Wisconsin 87-69. The Big Red shot 61 percent from the field against the Badgers. Bo Ryan’s Badgers hold teams under 57 points per game on 42 percent shooting.

Foote shot 10-12 for the weekend.

Who gets your POTW?

I know I’m a little biased but my POTW definitely goes to Jordan Crawford. With 27 points vs. Pitt and 28 points vs. Minnesota on Friday, he’s definitely making a name for himself. Although he got off to a slow start vs. Pitt, he finished 9 for 15 from the field, 4 for 7 from beyond the arc, and was 100% from the free throw line. When I was filling out my bracket and saw that I had chosen for Pitt and Xavier to be playing again, I picked Xavier and thought to myself, “I’ll just give it to them since I go here,” and ended up being really impressed with the entire team. Sweet Sixteen anyone? :)

    AB

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

POTW is the place for bias. The Pine is a better place when you are around.

Inside, outside, Crawford got it done wherever it was needed.

What was campus like last night?

The cafeteria was crazy! A bunch of students waited outside Cintas for the team to get back, but it was past my bedtime!

    I am jealous.

9:37 Thursday night is the next game. What is the plan? Are they setting up a large screen in the Cintas?

I second the nomination of Cornell. Great stuff!

    Happy B-day, Abbey!

Actually, I should nominate the Northern Iowa Panthers … two wins in the tourney, including the shocker of all shockers (up til now) … the upset of #1 overall seed, Kansas.

I am staying to homer route and going with the RIT.Tigers men’s hockey team. Saturday night clinched the first ever school berth in the NCAA hockey tournament. The beat Sacred Heart handily in front of 3,300+ .The sea of orange was loud and obnoxious for the opposition. A great atmosphere and a great night. Good luck to the Tigers against Denver this Friday in Albany.

Denver is TOUGH … I see them play Alaska Anchorage in WCHA games. Good luck to RIT … should have a bit of home ice advantage i would think.

  9. SmittyMarch 22nd, 2010 - 8:08 pm

Wally – Yeah Denver is going to be a tough first round opponent. Might be a little too much to ask for them to beat Denver, but playing in Albany and having one of the best goalies in the country (Jared DeMichiel) certainly gives them a chance.

  10. WallyMarch 23rd, 2010 - 11:35 am

Yep. Denver is #2 in the country. But that’s why we play the games … they could be farokhed by RIT :) Good luck!

  11. SmittyMarch 27th, 2010 - 9:49 pm

Wally, you can put Denver AND New Hampshire on the same list of those farokhed by RIT.. The Tigers were unbelievable all weekend, knocking off Denver (2-1) and New Hampshire (6-2) to move on to the Frozen Four!!

This wasn’t even a case of a hockey game winning by its goalie standing on his head and the rest of the team getting a lucky goal. RIT dominated both games and were rewarded. On to Detroit!! With my Dad being alumni, we are looking into getting tickets..

  12. WallyMarch 28th, 2010 - 2:08 pm

That’ll be fun, Smitty. Good luck to RIT the rest of the way! They’ve earned it!
