Okay, connoisseurs of all that is basketball, let us take the time and pour over some numbers. Below you will find raw statistics. The identities of these players are removed to avoid any possible allegiances or biases. Please avoid guessing or suggesting the players indicated by the statistics. Let’s discuss the possible value these players bring to their teams and to any team.
Today, we have a pair of centers that will go head to head a little later. What do you think?
Player A
PPG 17.0 (team scores 76.8 while allowing 71), FG percentage 53.6 (199/ 371 team shoots 45.1 901/ 1,996), FT percentage 73.1 (179/ 245 team shoots 71.8 606/ 844), RPG 10.5 (team rebound margin +5.2), BPG 3.4, SPG .4, Assist to Turnover 1 : 2, Fouls 3.0, Minutes played 31.0, his team’s strength of schedule is ranked (CBS) 156th.
Player B
PPG 7.0 (team scores 68.1 while allowing 61.4) FG percentage 61.8 (89/ 144 team shoots 44.6 754/ 1692), FT percentage 58.4 (45/ 77 team shoots 69.5 501/ 721), RPG 6.9 (team rebound margin +4.9), BPG 1.8, SPG .2, Assist to Turnover 1 : 2, Fouls 2.1, Minutes played 24.2, his team’s strength of schedule is ranked (CBS) 10th.
Remember, the object is NOT to guess or suggest the player identities. The identities will be disclosed later. Let’s talk some hoops.
I’m gonna have to give my preference to Player A. After adjsting the stats to be on a per minute basis, he still clearly comes out on top. Now, the unknown is of course how SOS factors into this, but I’m also suspecting that Player A is “the guy” for his team, whereas Player B is more of a good player on a very well-balanced team that is probably a Top 10 or 15 team in the country. Player A probably has to create shots for himself much more than B.
I am not seeing any other option here but Player A, in every category I would look at for a center.
Player A : Keith Benson – Oakland
Player B: Gary McGhee – Pittsburgh
McGhee’s Panthers got the better of it on Friday 89-66, but Benson was the game high with 28 points. Benson also tied for game-high rebounds with 9.
Wally, nice analysis re: who is the man on his team, and who is a role layer.
Wally – continuing to release his James Joyce. The Pine is a better place because of it.
