****All right gang, try and do this WITHOUT research. Let these numbers sink in for a little bit. Feel free to discuss the possibilities here in the thread. It is not so important as to WHO gets the correct answer as much as it is that we arrive at the answer.
78.6 percent. That is the first thing you need to know about this team. That number represents their team free-throw percentage. They lead the country. Not only do they lead in percentage, but among the top 20 teams for free throw percentage, only three have taken more free throws. Teams who play them better get ready to defend. No one else in the tournament scores more points per game than them – 83. They hit 41.9 percent from behind the three-point arc – third in the country. This is their fourth consecutive trip to The Dance and sixth in the last nine years, but they have not won a tournament game since 1993. They advanced to the Elite Eight in 1981 and the Sweet 16 in 1971. Although their strength of schedule is ranked 116 (CBS), their RPI comes in at 23 (CBS). They are 2-2 against teams in the top 25 and 2-3 against teams from 26-50.
Name that team.
When it comes to remembering stats, I am no Tony Reali. Therefore, I will try to rely on my critical thinking (or lack thereof). First of all, I will rule out Syracuse’s atrocious free throw shooting squad. I will begin with process of elimination. Since this team was 2-2 versus top 25 teams and 2-3 versus 26-50, I am lead to believe this team is would be in one of the more powerful conferences, unless they play a very tough non-conference schedule. Given the fact that this team shoots with such a high percentage of success, I would determine that this team has high quality offensive minded big men with a supporting case of guards that are able to distribute the ball while efficiently shooting from the outside. Lastly, this team must have a relatively strong program to recruit talented players to reach the tournament six of the last nine years. Through the efforts of my deduction skills, I have determined that I still have no idea. However, if had to venture a guess, that the team would be Notre Dame.
Murph on the PINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is worthy of a helmet sticker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m hazarding a guess; New Mexico. Siena was not a power enough in 1971. maybe G Tech. No they were national contenders under Bobby Cremins. Nope, NM or maybe even NM St.
I’m also thinking it’s a team out west due to the high-scoring and good beyond the arc … and not a lot of success in the Big Dance. Given the treys and awesome FT shooting, I’m thinking it’s one of those “cerebral teams” … not much hops but great shooters up and down the line-up. Best team up to now was apparently 1981. Can’t be UNLV … have a few final fours. New Mexico is a good guess … had some good teams back then … coached by the former Indiana sharp-shooter Steve Alford. Not Cal … I don’t think they score nearly that much, plus have been to Elite 8 more recently. In 1981, my heart was broken when Danny Ainge dribbled thru a maze of Notre Dame players with 5 seconds left to steal a huge tournament game from the Irish, but cannot remember if that was in a regional final or to get to Elite 8. Oh well … they sure score a lot of points without much hops … is it BYU???
I forgot Alford coaches NM. Who better to stress FT and 3 shooting than an Indiana HS and IU legend. His HS gym at New castle is the second largest in the state (behind Anderson’s Wigwam) and when I went in I thought I was in a professional or college arena.
Wally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just let out your inner James Joyce stream of consciousness.
That is the mother of all helmet stickers. BYU it is!!!!!
You can put it on the board …… yeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssss!!!
Happy St. Pat’s Day to all! Go Guiness, go Guiness …
