It is that time again. Let’s hear from you readers. We had another week of stellar performances. Pick the ONE that stands out to you, and tell us a story.
Louisville’s Kyle Kuric saved Freedom’s last stand and earned my POTW.
Kuric came off the bench and poured in 22 second-half points as the Cardinals downed No.1 Syracuse, 78-68.
Kuric averaged less than four points per game before Saturday. That did not stop the sophomore from hitting four of six from behind the arc while leading the Cardinals to the upset.
Syracuse led at half by eight, but Kuric hit 9 of 11 shots in the second stanza. The native of Evansville, Indiana added three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
The win saved Louisville’s NCAA Tournament life.
Louisville plans a move to a new arena for next season, and Saturday’s send off of Freedom Hall was fitting. Louisville teams through the years have made 35 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals won national titles in 1980 and 1986 under Denny Crum. The Cardinals punched 23 Dance tickets with Crum leading the way.
Who gets your POTW?
Total homer call here … REAL close to home! In a must-win 4A regional game Saturday, my daughter Emily poured in a career high 23 points to lead the Chugiak Lady Mustangs to a 59-46 win over East Anchorage HS to clinch a berth in the Alaska 4A State tournament (Elite
which starts Mar 15. Emily was named to the All-Tourney team and was also selected earlier in the week to the Cook Inlet Conference All-Region 1st team. Proud dad moments
Go ‘Stangs!
I am going with Michigan State who held a clinic on how to play defense yesterday against arch-rival Michigan. With a little more the 10 minutes left in THE game, Michigan had only scored 18 points. State got out and preesured the ball. Every dribble was contested every pass contested and every shot had a hand in the face. If State plays defense like that for the rest ofMarch — lookout!!
How about some NBA love to Dirk Nowitski who has his team on an 11 game win streak. He’s led the team in scoring all but 1 of those games and is averaging about 28 points per. He’s an underrated superstar and probably the best shooting big man in history. Once the college season is done, we’ll be forced to look to the NBA for some hoops actions. Thought I’d contribute a little info. here to get people thinking.
Smitty – great call! It is March and Izzo always has the horses ready to run.
Wally – there is always room on the pine for homer calls especially those for the Chugiak Mustangs!!!
Dan – fear not the NBA is on all of our minds. The Mavs are streaking and the Lakers are NOT. Oops, the trade deadline is gone and LA can’t go out and get anyone. Too bad.
Can we nominate someone even if their team lost? If we can, I want to nominate Brittany Mesler from the Wellsville girls’ basketball team. They lost to Nazareth in the section V finals, but it wasn’t her fault. She did everything she could . They were losing by more than 20 points, and Brittany helped her team get it back to eight points. She scored 16 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter – when it mattered most. I heard she made 10 of the 14 shots she took. Then she made nine free throws. I think that’s pretty good especially because she is only a freshman.
