Okay, connoisseurs of all that is basketball, let us take the time and pour over some numbers. Below you will find raw statistics. The identities of these players are removed to avoid any possible allegiances or biases. Please avoid guessing or suggesting the players indicated by the statistics. Let’s discuss the possible value these players bring to their teams and to any team.

Today, we look at a pair of point guards. We analyzed two quarterbacks of the hard court about a month ago. Let’s look at two other point guards.

Player A

PPG 15.4 (team scores 74 per game while allowing 64.6), FG percentage 46.3 ( 142/307 team shoots 47.9 percent – 768/ 1,602), 3Pt. percentage 36.0 (31/ 86 team shoots 33.6 – 139/ 414), FT percentage 78.9 (101/ 128), Assists to Turnovers 1.8: 1 (4.1 assists, 2.1 turnovers, team ratio 1.3: 1) RPG 1.9 (team rebound margin +8.5), SPG 1.1, BPG .1, Fouls 1.4, Minutes played 31.1. His team’s strength of schedule is currently ranked 41st.

Player B

PPG 18.8 (team scores 81 while allowing 68.9), FG percentage 42.4 (144/ 340 team shoots 42.4 percent – 726/ 1,568), 3Pt. percentage 39.6 (76/ 192 team shoots 36.4 – 185/ 508), FT percentage 80.9 (144/ 178), Assists to Turnovers 1.4 : 1 (3.8 assists, 2.8 turnovers, team ratio 1 : 1), RPG 2.5 (team rebound margin +5.5), SPG 1.7, BPG .1, Fouls 2.3, Minutes played 30.9, His team’s strength of schedule is currently ranked 9th.

Remember, the object is NOT to guess or suggest the player identities. The identities will be disclosed later. Let’s talk some hoops.

    Player B easily.

    Why?

I would take Player B as well, but it’s very close.

Player B takes more shots and shoots better from the three, therefore can stretch the defense more than player A. You can say B shoots a less percentage, but his percentage is exactly the same as his teams, so he fits right in there offense. Lastly, player B is having a better offensive season against better competition. Player B is who I will take. There’s nothing like a solid scoring PG.

I like an aggressive PG, so I’m also going with player B. He scores more points, gets to the foul line more often, isn’t afraid to hit the boards, and does it all against stronger competition. I also like a guy who doesn’t mind picking up some fouls here and there; I like to think it implies an aggressiveness.

Player B almost every category, except he has more turnovers. He has also played against tougher opponents, based on S.O.S

I’ll take more rebounds, steals and points delivered by B in exchange for a few more turnovers. B is the final answer.

B for me too. Every time I looked at a category (and I look at them in the order of importance to me) B came out on top. And to top it all off, he has a tougher strength of schedule. I’m with Houser; B easily. I think everybody else has already parsed the stats, so no repetition here. I will add that B strikes me as the better defender, not just based on stats but on an overall “sense”.

    Player A – Kalin Lucas/ Michigan State

    Player B – Jacob Pullen/ Kansas State
