Day late with this thought; sorry! The debate will continue to rage as to whether NASCAR drivers are athletes, but let’s approach from a different angle. Chad Knaus, Jimmy Johnson’s crew chief (coach per se) is beginning to approach the accomplishment levels of John Wooden, Anson Dorrance, and Dan Gable. They however, did it at amateur level with ever-changing rosters. Maybe it is more accurate to liken Knaus to Lombardi, Auerbach, and the procession of NYY managers who won so many pro titles. If Johnson/Knaus win their 5th consecutive Cup championship, then Knaus belongs in the aforementioned group(s), whether you want to call Johnson an athlete or not. Bottom line, he has crafted a dynasty at his sport’s highest level. Even 4 straight titles makes him noteworthy as a “coach”!

Not too many great “driving/mechanic coaches” out there, so let’s put him in the auto racing hall of fame. There is one, right? We can put Knaus’s bust next to Jiffy Lube’s “Employee of the Decade”.

Wally, I always appreciate your wit. Still, you can’t deny the comparison of his accomplishments to those other great coaches. They too are all dependent on the performance of another/others, but they create the winning atmosphere. I say put him in the Coaches’ Hall of Fame (if and when there ever is one). Bottom line, there aren’t too many great coaches … period!
