By Paul Gotham

This team made three Elite Eight appearances in the 90s and won 12 NCAA Tournament games in the decade, but they have not won a game in The Dance since 2001. By winning their conference tournament, they have qualified for the field of 65 the last two years. The recipe is different from the 90s, but the result is the same. In the 90s, this team played a stifling match-up. Now, they play straight up man to man. They are ranked in the top ten of three important categories. This team holds opponents to 57 points a game and limits opposing shooters to a three-point percentage of 28.5. You won’t see their opponents getting many open-floor lay ups because they know how to take care of the ball, only turning it over 10.8 times per game. Their strength of schedule is ranked 38th and their RPI is in the top 20.

Name that team.

    UNLV?

Smitty – good try. But there is a better answer.

    The Vols?

After much thought and research, I found out the answer! The Temple Owls, from the surprisingly tough A-10, have had a solid season and as Casey has pointed out, have the necessary make-up to cause a team fits come March. Although, Richmond did handle them pretty easily Saturday. Oh those fiesty Spiders! Alma-mater of Todd McShay!

    Final Answer: Temple Owls

My original guess (Oklahoma) did not post apparently. But I like Potter’s guess. I had also thought of UNLV Smitty, but I thought Casey would mention national championships in his summary if it was them. Besides, wasn’t their run in 70s and 80s? They either went to Final Four or home early if I recall.

Doug – Temple is the answer.

Pete – UNLV won the title in 1990 and lost in the Final Four in 1991. You had a guess not post? Please let me know if that happens again.

Well, Casey, if you had said their SOS was 39th, instead of 38th, I woulda had it :)

    RPI SOS
    17 Temple 19-5 0.6289 39 0.5677
    18 Vanderbilt 16-5 0.6275 24 0.5778
    19 Tennessee 18-4 0.6260 38 0.5680

Casey, my entry not posting is the fault of my computer. My little notepad loses internet access suddenly, often, and without my awareness. No problem with the site.

    Doug,

‘surprisingly tough A10?’ Who did the Mountaineers lose to in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament?

  11. Doug PotterFebruary 10th, 2010 - 11:51 am

haha yes it was Dayton, but who predicted Temple, Rhode Island, Charlotte, Xavier, and the Richmond Spiders ALL to be working on NCAA Tournament resumes?! Meanwhile, the Pac-10 will most likely get just one bid (the automatic bid).
