Continuing a new series here on Pickin’ Splinters. This feature is designed to help readers get familiar with teams around the country. After considering all the facts, make your guess as to the team being described. Please try and not look up the answer.
This team gets forgotten in their conference. With other schools from its league hovering near the top of the rankings, it is easy to overlook them. Nonetheless, they are hanging around in the top 25. Their recipe is time tested: rebounding and defense. Ranked in the top five of the nation in field goal percentage defense (36.6), rebound margin (8.8), and blocked shots (7.5). this team has won almost four times as many as they have lost despite playing a strength of schedule ranked 34th. Their defense feeds they offense as they hit 49 percent from the field (13th in the nation). They hit 39.7 percent from behind the three point arc. But their three-point defense is their achilles heel as they allow 33.3 percent from long range (144th in the country).
Name that team.
Is it Pitt ?
Ah – a good guess. But there is a better answer.
The Baylor Bears! My sleeper team this year! LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter! Good choice. They don’t get enough publicity or hype. They are a solid team in the Big 12.
Baylor Bears it is! Considering the recent off-the- court struggles of this program, Scott Drew has done a great job rebuilding the Bears. I was surprised when I looked at their stats. That could be an impressive combination come March – solid defense with a high field goal percentage. Depending on their draw, I would not be surprised if Baylor reached the Sweet Sixteen. I have seen them play once this year. It was early on when they beat Xavier. At the time, I thought it was more a case of Xavier losing than Baylor winning. I am seeing that might not be true.
Baylor has been on the brink of big success for a few years now. They are a sleeper. I would not have guessed them. Nice going Doug.
