Okay, connoisseurs of all that is basketball, let us take the time and pour over some numbers. Below you will find raw statistics. The identities of these players are removed to avoid any possible allegiances or biases. Please avoid guessing or suggesting the players indicated by the statistics. Let’s discuss the possible value these players can have to their individual teams and to any team.
Today, we look at the position of shooting guard. Do you like the the traditional point guard? The guy who puts the ball in the hands of teammates who can score, where they can score. Or, do you like a point guard who fill it up?
Let’s get to it.
Player A
PPG 17.1, FG% 48.4 (107-221 / team has taken 1,195 shots), 3Pt.% 37.5 (18-48), FT% 79.5 (93-117), APG 6.6, TOPG 3.9, A : TO 1.7:1, RPG 3.7, SPG 2.1 (39), BPG .5 (9), Fouls 1.9, Minutes played 33.5. His team’s strength of schedule is currently ranked 81st.
Player B
PPG 18.7, FG% 49.6 (115-232 / team has taken 1,205 shots), 3Pt.% 41.7 (43-103), FT% 80.6 (100-124), APG 3.3, TOPG 2.6, A:TO 1.3 : 1, RPG 2.8, SPG 1.7 (33), BPG .1 (2), Fouls 2.2, Minutes played 29.1. His team’s strength of schedule is currently ranked 40th.
Remember, the object is NOT to guess or suggest the player identities. The identities will be disclosed later. Let’s talk some hoops.
After much deliberation, I’ve made my determination. In my maiden post on the good ol’ Pickin Splinters Blind Resume I’m going with Player B. I like a guy who’s aggressive, gets his teammates involved, but doesn’t put it on their shoulders. His turnover margin shows he’s a more consistent distributor (quality over quantity) and he’s doing this against much better competition.
For the first time, I am not using strength of schedule as a determinant. I am going with A. His/her APG stat sways me, even in the face of a higher turnover rate. A also gets more RPG, an indication that he/she is aware and active. That leads me to believe he/she is a good defender. PG has to be a good defender. As the opposition brings the ball up the court he/she is responsible for directing the OPPOSITION’s offense, a role as critical as directing one’s own offense. I think Player A brings both the offensive and defensive presence I would want to see in my PG.
CAPP04 – welcome to the Pine!
I’m going with Player A. Not only do I get a significantly better A/TO ratio, I get an extra rebound and more steals, too. Player A appears better as a defender … sign me up for A due to all of the above!
I’m aligned with Pete! Player A is the PG we WISH played for ND! Ha!
Heck, A is the point guard we wished COACHED ND, the BGI/Somogyi article notwithstanding!
To all
Solid discussion!
Player A – John Wall Kentucky
Player B – Scottie Reynolds Villanova
PG-A seems to be shooting outside shots when he has to, taking nearly half as many as PG-B. But, he knocks them down with nearly the same accuracy. They’ve got to be higher quality shots though and at a time where the defense must not be closing out to him. PG-A also seems to take care of two intangibles: defense (averaging more steals with fewer fouls) and he can rebound from his position! Even though PG-B can obviously shoot from the outside and score a bunch quickly, PG-A is someone who does a little of everything and will knock down shots when the defense calls for it. I’ll go with PG-A.
Now I’ll see who they were and what you guys say…
Wow! I hate John Wall, but to be honest I don’t really see Reynolds as that traditional PG, so I’m still happy with picking A.
I don’t hate John Wall. I hate the hype. Same thing as the radio ruining a good song by playing it over and over.
No, Casey. I HATE John Wall. Remember our conversations about him in high school. I’ve seen him play in HS and the hype is not the problem. I don’t hate his game, but in my non-professional opinion he has the ability to self-destruct at any moment and cause a team to implode.
