Let’s see who can do this without any research.
I was no ordinary weapon. I became the center piece of a trade referred to as the Louisiana Purchase. I went in one direction and two players and four draft picks went in the other direction. Two of those eventual draft picks were pretty well known. One guy had a nickname for walking on air. When he was in college, his team ended the Wizard’s string of national titles. Another draft pick was one of the first players to go directly from high school to the NBA. As you can imagine with that many guys and picks leaving, my new team didn’t do too well. We never finished above .500. At most, we won 39 games in the ’77-’78 season. My All-American status in college could not even get us into the NBA playoffs. After five and a half years my 23.6 ppg and I were waived. I did hook up with one more team before retiring, but I never won a title.
Who am I?
W/o reserach, I am totally stumped. Well not totally. Dominique Wilkins comes to mind. I am trying to figure who “walks on air” from that era? Texas Western? Kenny Sky Walker of Ky? Got me totally on this one. I guess it’s off to google for me. Wonder what bb trivia guru will nail this one? Would you have known this without research?
Pete – you are right. Without research, I would struggle. That’s why I give it to you. Besides, I only gave you one to ponder. Did you look up the answer yet?
Pistol Pete Maravich? Only cuz he played at LSU and his teams were poor in the pros.
David Thompson was the “Skywalker”.
Wally to the rescue!
Get rid of that question mark! ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich it is. Wally great job following the trail of crumbs. And yes, David ‘Skywalker’ Thompson’s 1974 NC State Wolfpack ended John ‘The Wizard of Westwood’ Wooden’s nine year championship run of the UCLA Bruins. NC State downed UCLA in the semis 80-77.
Thanks Wally. I was coming up blank even in research. Sad that I did not know. Pistol was one of my favorites.
