Scotty 'Got Some' Hopson
By Paul Gotham
What a week of sports action that provided plenty of performances with which to choose. Step up readers and tell a story. Give us your ONE performance of the week.
The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team earned my POTW.
Bruce Pearl’s Vols were down but not out, and in the end, Tennessee knocked No. 1 from atop the mountain.
With only six scholarship players in the lineup, the undermanned Volunteers handed No. 1 Kansas their first defeat of the season.
Led by Scotty “Got Some” Hopson, the Vols shot 48.1 percent from the field en route to a 76-68 victory. Hopson scored 17 with Bobby Maze adding 16 and Renaldo Woolridge 14.
But the biggest shot belonged to a walk-on.
With the shot clock about to expire and the Vols clinging to a three-point lead, Skylar McBee knocked down a trifecta to extend the Tennessee lead.
The Vols overcame some shaky free throw shooting. As a team the Vols made 15 of 29 attempts including 3 of 8 in the game’s final 2:13.
Prior to Sunday’s game, the Jayhawks held 12 of its first 14 opponents under 40 percent from the field.
Tennessee played without four players who were arrested on gun and drug charges on January first.
Who gets your POTW?
I’ll give it to the Baltimore Ravens. In about 10 minutes or so, they gave me the freedom to change the channel, scoring like thirty times on as many takeovers.
I’ll go with Kurt Warner. What a clinic he put on Sunday in the OT win over the Packers! Aaron Rogers played great, too, but not as terrific and mistake-free as Warner, who just put a little more spackle on to cement a Hall of Fame induction some day.
Bill – I was half expecting Porky Pig to come running across the screen and proclaim: dabba da dabba da Dat’s all folks. The Ravens came out punching and put that one away quick.
Wally – Warner should make the Hall just because there is no quit in that guy. Don’t forget the Giants showed him the door a few years ago. He doesn’t care. Just keeps at it. Great stuff.
I am going with the Buffalo Sabres who had another 6 game winning streak going until it was snapped on Saturday against the Avalanche. It took a 11 round shootout to snap the streak as well.
But Ryan Miller continues to be the front runner for Vezina Trophy. Miller had 48 saves Thursday night in a 3-2 win over their much hated rival Toronto Maple Leafs.
Smitty – great call!
Miller = Hart Memorial
I was pretty amazed at what happened. I switched channels for a second, came back, and the Ravens had already scored. Then Brady got ripped off and they did it again. Then the Pats couldn’t see the kick coming, and more, and more. It was like a “worst day at the office” scenario for the Pats, and a “hit the lottery” day for the Ravens. I saw more excitement in the first ten minutes than in any game I’ve watched all year. When the second game started out pretty much the same, I thought, here we go again. But then Green Bay came back, only to see another Brady like purse snatching win the game. Hilarious.
I love to see the heart of great quarterbacks that understand that winning is the most important part, not the stats.
Congrats to Flacco whose 84 yards and 10 attempts would be enough to make some premadonna quarterbacks angry. “You want to run the ball every play coach??” “OK” “No problem”.
Congrats to Sanchez. There are a lot of haters out there but the kid is a gamer, he’s an athlete, and right now, he’s fitting that scheme very well. Hopefully he doesn’t forget these youthful days as some of the older QBs seem to be doing. (i.e. McNabb who I’d rather see dancing on the field after a big score than before the game in the tunnel) Keep having fun Sanchez as you never know when or if you’ll have the chance at a Super Bowl run again.(Dan Marino)
Also, major props to Kurt Warner. I have a technical appreciation for the position as well and I can tell you first hand that some of those throws and reads were phenomenal. He’s a great QB because of intelligence, timing, and accuracy.
Tony Romo bothers me for other reasons, so not so much props…
I’m pumped for next week’s QBs though. The top 4 vote getters for this year’s MVP…Manning, Brees, Rivers, Favre…add those other guys…’nuff said…
I say it all the time…”Next week is the greatest weekend of football all year”…yes, better than the Super Bowl…
