What a week of sports action with so many performances with which to choose. Step up readers and tell us a story. Give us your one, uno, une performance of the week.
Wake Forest’s Ishmael Smith earned my POTW.
Entering play Sunday night, Smith was 38 percent from the free throw line and had made just four of 24 attempts from behind the three-point arc. The senior point guard put that all behind him as he led the Demon Deacons to a thrilling double overtime victory against Xavier in the first annual Skip Prosser Classic, 96-92.
Smith played 49 of 50 minutes and led Wake Forest with 28 points. The native of Concord, North Carolina went five of nine from the charity stripe and hit all three of his three-point attempts. Smith also added nine assists and four rebounds.
For Xavier it was the second double overtime game the Musketeers played on a Sunday night. Three weeks ago the Muskies downed Cincinnati in double OT, 83-79.
Who gets your POTW?
As much as I thought he’d be in traction by now, or sipping lemonade on the steps of a retirement home, Brett Favre gets a nod. Though I didn’t watch the game ( though I did see some of the game where the Bills took on Indy’s B squad), his stats, “25 of 31 passes for 316 yards and 4 TDs, leading the Vikings to 31 first-half points and then increasing that lead to 41-0 before being pulled out of the game in the 3rd quarter” (nfl.com) would be impressive for a whole game. I’m sure he celebrated after by downing his Geritol with a 40 oz Metamucil, but hey, props to the geezer.
My player of the week is not a player but a coach. I loved hearing so many Rex Ryan quotes this week. I love how this guy coaches. His team needed to win and they did big with lots of emotion. Can’t say the same thing about Josh McDaniel’s pitiful Broncos. What an uninspired performance against a terrible team. 2-8 to end the year. Emotion and pride carries a team late in the year. The Broncos as a team showed neither.
I am going with a coach as well… I am going with Idaho’s coach Robb Akey. Rather then kick the extra point and go into overtime against Bowling Green – Coach Akey decided to go for 2 with .04 seconds on the clock to decide the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl.
Riding the wave of momentum, Coach Akey made the right call. Idaho completed the 2 point play and won the game 43-42.
I’ll nominate Jamal Charles, the KC Chiefs running back who tallied 259 yards and 2 TDs against that Broncos, who had to win to make the playoffs. First time I’ve noticed Charles, who reminds me of Tennesee’s Chris Johnson.
How lucky are the Jets? They finished the season against two teams who were packing it in to protect their players for the playoffs … but I’m not sure what Cincy was doing … whatever it was, it was WEAK!
Great calls on the Pine!!!!
Bill – you are not the only one giving credit where it is due. I will be eating some crow later on in the NFL Splinters piece for the week.
Smitty – Schlereth and Eric K had a blast with that win. Schlereth is a proud Idaho alum. A whole lot of ‘Achey Breaky Heart’ was played on Friday’s Mike and Mike show.
Dan – great call. Not easy to keep the troops motivated especially when Rex pretty much waved the white flag a couple of weeks ago.
Wally – the Chefs…er…Chiefs are showing promise for next year.
To all those Demon Deacon fans enjoying their first time on the Bench, please give us a comment or two. John Wall has nothing on ‘Call me’ Ishmael Smith!
