Ring in the New Year with a Big 12 – West Coast Conference clash. It’s the Ronald McDonald House Charities Classic at Spokane Arena. Jeff Capel brings his Oklahoma Sooners (8-4) west for an inter-conference showdown with Mark Few’s No.22 Gonzaga Bulldogs (9-3).
December 31, 1973 – Bear Bryant’s top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide came to the Sugar Bowl with an 11-0 record & the UPI National Championship in hand. Before 1974, the UPI Coaches’ poll was voted prior to the bowl games. The Crimson Tide’s defense featured All-SEC LB Woodrow Lowe & All-SEC DB Mike Washington while the offense had All-American OT Buddy Brown, QB Gary Rutledge, & QB Richard Todd. In the first meeting between these two storied programs, the 3rd ranked, 10-0 Notre Dame Fighting Irish of coach Ara Parseghian were happy to defend The Belt to decide the true champion. The game featured six lead changes with a missed extra point by Alabama’s PK Bill Davis the difference in a 24-23 Notre Dame win.

Kenny Frease made good on a first career start with 12 points and seven rebounds. Terrell Holloway led the way with 20. Jamel McLean picked up the double-double off the bench with 10 points and 10 boards. The Musketeers out-rebounded the Tigers 51-29.
Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy had a good message. He wanted to protect his player. The fact that he reminded folks that he coaches students and not professionals is admirable. It’s just that about two minutes into his tirade bystanders had to worry about their personal safety.
December 30, 1981 – The Navy Midshipmen of coach George Welsh came to The Liberty Bowl with a 7-3-1 record having tied rival Army 3-3. The Ohio State Buckeyes of coach Earle Bruce were 8-3 & Big Ten Co-Champs having beaten rival Michigan 14-9. Navy’s RB Eddie Meyers rushed for 117 yards but his effort was not enough to overcome the Buckeyes’ balanced attack in a 31-28 Ohio State win.
After a season where both of these teams won their respective conferences, LSU and Xavier each need to prove themselves. LSU is looking up at a revived Kentucky program while Mississippi State and Ole Miss have also improved. Xavier will need to knock off Temple and Dayton to win their fourth consecutive A-10 title.
Much to the chagrin of all those looking to witness history, the Indianapolis Colts pulled the plug on their run to perfection. With a 9-3 lead at half, Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark …(anyone I forgot?) traded helmets on baseball caps, and the New York Jets handed Indy loss numero uno, 29-15.
After a week break the Orange open Big East play at 12-0 for the sixth time during Boeheim’s tenure. Seton Hall will face their second consecutive undefeated and top ten team. On Saturday, the Pirates lost in overtime to West Virginia, 90-84.
