NFL Splinters | Week 12, 2009

With two teams maintaining undefeated records, the Minnesota Vikings might go unnoticed. Well, maybe not. The pressure of going undefeated is off them, and the Vikings might have the best lineup in the NFL. Instead of falling apart like Humpty Dumpty, Brett Favre contniues to lead the potent Viking offense. Yesterday, the Vikes rolled up 537 total yards against the Chicago Chihuahuas…er…Bears. Favre with Adrian Peterson, and Sidney Rice are as lethal a trio as any in the league. Minnesota averages 31 points per game. New Orleans leads the league at 36.9, and Indy scores 27.6. At the same time the Vikes limit opponents to 18.5ppg. New Orleans opponents score 20 ppg. Indy’s adversaries get 16.7.

This Date in College Football Belt History – November 30

November 30, 1991 – The 4-6 Houston Cougars of coach John Jenkins had their 2nd shot at The Belt this season as they met the 5-5 Texas Tech Red Raiders of coach Spike Dykes. The Cougars lost to Baylor earlier in the year. It’s Over! It’s Over!

Thank goodness, the Charlie Weis Era is over! And I’m not the only one who’s delighted about this. As you can see in the photo, Charlie is being escorted straight to an NFL coordinators job … do not pass go, do not clean up your office … we’ll send you your stuff.

Winter Rules?

“What? Let me get this straight – the behemoth of the Cadillac line is compromised in a slow speed accident so insignificant that the airbags don’t pop, but the only way to get Tiger out is whacking out the rear glass with a wedge?”

Duke – UConn: Tale of the Tape

The teams have split 4-4 all time with UConn taking the last four. When these two teams get together, there is usually quite a bit at stake. Christian Laettner’s buzzer-beater was the difference when Duke advanced in the 1990 East Regional. Khalid El-Amin and the Huskies “shocked the world” when they downed the Blue Devils in 1999 NCAA Finals. Last meeting, UConn beat Duke, 79-78 in the 2004 National Semi-Finals. Duke has won the NIT Tip Off in 1985, 2000, and 2005.

This Date in College Football Belt History – November 25

November 25, 1972 – The 3rd ranked, 10-0 Michigan Wolverines of coach Bo Schembechler came to Columbus on a strong roll, having won 21 consecutive regular season games, to face coach Woody Hayes’ 9th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes who stood 8-1 with their only loss had coming at Michigan State. Ohio State had OT John Hicks to open holes for a freshman running back named Archie Griffin who rushed for 75 yards & a touchdown but it was the Buckeyes’ defense that saved the day with two goal line stands, 12 plays inside their 5-yard line, that secured a 14-11 Buckeyes’ victory & Ohio State’s first Belt championship.

The Indianapolis Colts will take whatever they get; the New Orleans delivered a knockout punch. Doesn’t matter how different the approach is, the Colts and Saints remain unblemished.

Springsteen: Can You Feel The Spirit?

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band’s 34-song performance Sunday night took fans on a wild romp that deviated from any possible linear connections. Someone could calculate the total time of the set’s studio versions. But there is no need. That total would fall far short of what Bruce and the band busted out at the tour’s finale.
