October 27, 1973 – Coach John McKay’s 6th ranked, 5-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans came to South Bend with a 23-game unbeaten streak for the annual battle with Notre Dame. Coach Ara Parseghian had the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 5-0 & ranked 8th in the nation but they had not defeated Southern Cal since 1966. Notre Dame’s top-ranked defense had only allowed 2 touchdowns through the first 5 games & they held Southern Cal’s All-Pac 8 RB Anthony Davis to 50 yards rushing while the Notre Dame offense capitalized on 316 yards rushing including an 85-yard touchdown run by RB Eric Penick to gain a 23-14 victory claiming their first Belt reign.
After limping through three losses, Mark Sanchez “spit in the face of these Badlands” and led the Jets to a 38-0 drubbing of Oakland H.S.. Sanchez went 9 of 15 for for 143 yards and one touchdown. Okay, so the game plan didn’t take many chances. At least they Jets coaching staff showed Sanchez can do an efficient job of handing off the pigskin.

October 26, 1974 – The 2-3-1 Tennessee Volunteers, coached by Bill Battle, hosted the 3-3 Clemson Tigers of coach Red Parker trying to become the first SEC team to claim The Belt. Tennessee was coming off loses to Louisiana State & Alabama as they looked to right the season in this match-up. Tennessee’s RB Stanley Morgan scored 3 touchdowns & DT David Page recorded 3 sacks as the Volunteers eked out a 29-28 victory with a 2-point conversion with 1:31 left in the game to claim their first Belt reign.

Whew! Another gut-wrenching, closer-than-it –ought-to-be nightmare that turned out okay for Notre Dame. But THIS time, it was the Irish DEFENSE that really came through when the pressure was on in the 4th quarter. And I’m not sure how they did it. As confounding as this team’s defense is in terms of failing to stop opponents on obvious passing downs, the Irish somehow forced BC into several costly 4th quarter turnovers to save this game and generally bail out the offense after a mostly ineffective day.
