Today ( Thursday) starts the beginning of the President’s Cup at the Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, CA.. The President’s Cup pits the US against the rest of the world – outside of Europe. The Cup doesn’t have the appeal that the Ryder Cup carries – certainly justified since the Ryder Cup has a huge head start on it.

Still it is fun to watch the golfers suddenly take on “team” approach to the game and play for national pride. Considering the success of last year’s Ryder Cup team – without Tiger Woods – it will be interesting to see how this team plays with him on the team. Could it be a case of his star power being a little too dominant for the team? Or did teams in the past relax because – well let’s face it – Tiger Woods was there? It will be interesting to see how the other golfers react and play this weekend.

On a side note. Did anyone see the report on Michael Jordan during the practice rounds at the President’s Cup? Apparently there is a ban on public smoking in San Fran – including golf courses. Apparently Jordan was doing his best “not” to smoke – by cutting down from 4 cigars a round to only 1 cigar. Apparently city officials are afraid of him – rather then ask Jordan to not smoke or issue a fine, city officials asked the PGA to remind Jordan not the smoke. When specificially asked a city officia said, ” I am not going to fine him.”

Apparently the Jordan Rules still exist……..

Maybe Woods is like A-Rod; just does not help the chemistry of a TEAM despite being an immensely talented individually. Good news for golf and Tiger; he seldom has to play on a team. Bad news for baseball; A-Rod always does.

Pete, I find it comical that A-Rod got 2 hits last night and suddenly he has rid himself of his post-season ghosts? I am sorry – 2 singles rid 4 years of playoff struggles?

Wow – So if Bill Buckner fields one grounder – everything is forgiven?

  4. CaseyOctober 8th, 2009 - 11:25 am

In A-Rod’s defense – has he ever had anyone like Mark Teixeira batting behind him?

This Red Sox fan hopes that Jorgy Posada creates the chemistry problems this year. Seems like ARod has put that stuff behind him.

Not trying split hairs – but A-Rod hits behind Teixeira. Still, I am not sure he has had that kind of help in the lineup before. Giambi a little bit, never anyone that consistent in the Yankees lineup.

Casey, the worst words I’ve ever heard you speak/write; “in defense of A-Rod”! And EVERY post season (that he’s in) A-Rod gives some sign that he has shaken the post-season slump. It’s usually in the beginning of the post season, when the regular season is still wearing off. Give him time. Posada can only get an assist when it comes to post season jinxes where A-Rod is concerned.

C’mon Pete. I’m just trying to cut the guy some slack. That is quite a burden he is carrying.

    :)

How ’bout those Dodgers? None of the pundits on ESPN seemed to give them a chance. I know … it’s only one game. But I see them as underdogs in the same light as last year when they faced the Cubs in round 1. Of course, that was the Cubs … what am I thinking??

Let’s see how A-Rod does this post-season … he has a great opportunity to change impressions this year … let’s wait and see. (But we can always root against him).

The BENCH is getting too soft for me. First Wally asks me to give Unweis a shred of credit, now Casey tells me he’s cutting A-Loser a break. You guys are too sensitive and reasonable for this crotchety old man! Wally, I never bother to root against A-Rod. He takes care of business without ANY support from the fans. He’s too good at what he does to ever need any fan support!

  10. WallyOctober 8th, 2009 - 7:44 pm

Your advanced age gives you the right to be impatient and crotchety, Pete. Afterall, you have less time to see progress toward the excellence we’re all hoping to see ;)

  11. WallyOctober 8th, 2009 - 8:38 pm

And that previous comment was intended “with all due respect”.

  12. WallyOctober 9th, 2009 - 9:35 pm

Crossword Pete … meet A-Rod … he’s the guy who just tied Game 2 in the bottom of 9th with a CLUTCH homerun (much to my chagrin, I might add).

  13. Crossword PeteOctober 9th, 2009 - 10:40 pm

The regular season is wearing off extra slowly this year.
