“But how can you be sure that child will grow up and choose the most lucrative sport? After all, you want a nice place on the beach, right?”
September 30, 1995 – The 1-2 Brigham Young Cougars of coach Lavell Edwards traveled to Fort Collins to meet the 2-1 Colorado State Rams of Sonny Lubick. Cougars’ QB Steve Sarkisian threw 3 touchdown passes while the defense held Colorado State to 14 yards rushing & withstood 2 late touchdown passes from Rams’ back-up QB Moses Moreno as Brigham Young won 28-21 to claim their first Belt reign.
September 29, 2007 – The 2-2 Auburn Tigers with coach Tommy Tuberville traveled to Gainesville to meet the 4th ranked, 4-0 Florida Gators of coach Urban Meyer. The Tigers entered the game with little confidence having lost home games to South Florida & Mississippi State after entering the season ranked 18th nationally. Now out of the national rankings, Auburn was a 21-point underdog to The Belt holding Gators but this was an upset weekend in college football as 6 of the top 13 teams had already fallen & the Tigers were about to make it 7. Auburn’s PK Wes Byrum connected on a 43-yard field goal as time expired giving the Tigers a 20-17 upset win.
Mark Sanchez is showing he’s not a boy; he might just be a man, and he has Jets fans dreaming of the Promised Land. With the Pats in week 2 and the Titans in week 3, many had the Jets opening the season at 1-2. And rightly so. Rex Ryan would have been happy with 2-1. 3-0 and Rexy has to be giddy. Giving up 33 points in three games and one of those games against the Pats – the Jets might be for real. Since they play home games in Jersey, Bruce can offer a little more advice: “Blow away the dreams that tear you apart – Blow away the dreams that break your heart -Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted.”
In the first-ever meeting between the intrastate schools, USF went into Tallahassee and came away victorious, 17-7. Daniels rushed for 126 yards and threw for 215 including two touchdowns to lead the Bulls. Playing in place of injured senior, Matt Grothe, Daniels accounted for 343 of USF’s 368 total yards.
September 28, 1974 – The 0-1-1 Purdue Boilermakers of coach Alex Agase seemed unlikely to threaten the Belt reign of the 2-0 Notre Dame Fighting Irish of coach Ara Parseghian. Coming off a loss to Wisconsin & a tie with Miami (OH), the Boilermakers were 28-point underdogs to the 2nd ranked, defending National Champions. Purdue scored 24 points in the 1st quarter, including a 52-yard touchdown run by RB Pete Gross, on their way to a stunning 31-20 win ending the 7-game Belt reign of Notre Dame while claiming both The Belt & the Shillelagh Trophy.
Clausen took over from there. Hobbled with a sore toe on his plant foot, Clausen and Notre Dame took possession on their own 28. The junior signal caller completed passes to Golden Tate, Robert Hughes, and Kyle Rudolph, and ND had first down on the Boilermaker 32. Completions to Robby Parris and Tate gave the Irish first and goal on the Purdue 4-yard line.
Scratch out October 3rd on the calendar of games to watch. Instead, insert October 31st. The Bears might have looked ahead to next week’s game with USC. (Okay, anyone who was having trouble saying national title and California in the same sentence doesn’t have to worry anymore.) Now the game that to decide the PAC 10 could come on Hallow’s Eve when the Trojans make a trip north to Eugene. Oh, the tricks and treats will be bountiful.
After the game, SC running back, Joe McKnight stated: “Washington wasn’t the better team, they just outplayed us.” McKnight’s quote is eerily reminiscent of the comments made by another Trojan a few years ago. Moments after their loss in the 2005 Rose Bowl, Matt Leinart remarked: “I think we’re a better football team; they just made the plays in the end.”
September 25, 1982 – Coach Paul Wiggin’s Stanford Cardinal came to Columbus with a 1-1 record to meet the 13th ranked, 2-0 Ohio State Buckeyes of coach Earle Bruce. Stanford’s All-American QB John Elway threw 63 times (a Stanford school-record) completing 35 for 407 yards with 2 touchdowns including an 18-yard touchdown pass to WR Emile Harry with just 0:34 to play to lead the Cardinal to a 23-20 upset of the Buckeyes.
