cornellGive it up for the Cornell Big Red men’s lacrosse team. The seven seeded champs of the Ivy League toppled #1 Virginia, 15-6 to advance to the NCAA Division I finals.

The Big Red led 8-2 at half and never looked back from there.  Today’s all- Upstate New York final vs. Syracuse marks Cornell’s first trip to the title game in 21 years.  Game time 1pm.

The San Diego Padres just completed the first 9-0 homestand in their history on Sunday … the longest in the National League this season and the longest current streak going. (Unfortunately, the last few wins came against the Cubs who can’t hit their way out of a paper bag these days).

    Great call – Wally!

I’m giving mine to Hull City. Even though they did nothing to help themselves, they avoided relegation by having everyone else lose. They get to stay in the Premier League while Westbromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, and (holy crap!) Newcastle United will compete in the Championship next season. Hull City gave Premier fans fits earlier in the season when they sat in the top four for quite some time and completed the London sweep before their mighty fall to the bottom.

And yes – I just gave my Performance of the Week to a team that lost and finished in seventeenth place.

Reynell – I am following your lead here a little. I am going with the LeMoyne’s Mens Lacrosse Team who lost to C.W. Post 8-7 on Sunday for the Division II National Championship. It was their first loss of the season and a heartbreaker it was, as they outshot Post 18-2 in the 4th quarter.

Unfortunately, it ended on a tough note, it was a great season for the Dolphins and should be noted.

What an ending the Syracuse/Cornell championship. Unbelievable. Lacrosse is starting to move up the list for me in the category of ” Games to watch on TV”.

Smitty – continuing with the lead – how about Upstate NY’s impact on college lacrosse? As stated above – Syracuse and Cornell playing for the D1 title (speaking of heart breakers – Cornell up3 with less than 5:00 remaining). As you said LeMoyne playing for the DII title. AND SUNY Cortland won the DIII crown. Beyond that, two girls from the Rochester area played prominent roles as Northwestern won the women’s DI championship.

In terms of hot areas for lacrosse – New York and Maryland are it. Even with the emergence of LeMoyne in the last decade, Syracuse and Cornell have been powerhouses in the past, and Division III schools Hobart and Nazareth have had great lacrosse programs in the past. I think New York would be an obvious choice for its impact in lacrosse, given its roots in the sport with Native American tribes such as the Iroqouis, Seneca, Mohawk and Onondagan tribes.

Lacrosse is becoming very popular at the high school level and it continues to grow on the college level. Last year I went to the championship games for bothe Cortland and LeMoyne respectively. What I was shocked at, was the number of people there for the Division II and Division III games. Division I, played the day before – I could understand. But when the Division II and Division III games are drawing 30,000+, you know the game is heading in the right direction.

On the professional level – Rochester has had the Knighthawks in the indoor lacrosse league. It will be interesting to see if the popularity can continue to grow.

I actually watched the 2nd half of the Nat’l title match between Cornell and Syracuse with great curiosity. Growing up in the midwest, we did not have lacrosse in high school. Notre Dame is probably one of the few midwestern universities that have lacrosse, as does Northwestern. Seems like the sport is growing some.

I was amused by two things in particular that are quite contrary to basketball and even soccer. 1) when the ball goes out of bounds, it is awarded to the team that is closest to it, not away from the team that last touched it as in the other two sports. 2) it is apparently legal to whack the hell out of your opponent with the stick to try to jar the ball away … so what rules govern physical contact in lacrosse ??? What warrants a penalty???

I wanted to take a moment to provide some insight on Wally’s questions within his latest posting. 1) if the ball goes out of bounds off a pass or errant ball handling, it is awarded to the opposing team, only when the ball goes out of bounds from a shot on goal is it a race to be the closest for possession. 2) there are many rules regarding how you can check one another in lax. you cannot hit above the sholders, cannot cross-check with the portion of the stick between your hands, cannot hit below the waist, cannot hit an area of the body outside of the arms or hands and those can be illegal if there is no obvious attempt to reach the stick, and you cannot extend your arms into another when charging/body checking and this must be done with not more than 3 steps prior to impacting the opponent.

I’m from Syracuse, NY (hotspot of the sport) and have been playing for 23 years now. I have a Division III National Championship ring from 1997 with Nazareth College. Please feel free to ask your questions and I’ll try to keep up with the answers. The final 3 mins of the Syracuse-Cornell game and the <1 min of OT gets my vote indefinitely. This was one of the most exciting championship games I’ve ever seen.
