My POTW goes to Ray Allen.
At some point during game 6 of the Bulls -Celtics series I broke with my usual NBA non-partisan mode and sub-consciously began cheering for the Celts. I cannot explain this change in mindset other than knowing I wanted Allen’s season to continue past this series.
If you don’t know already, Allen’s number for game six: 51 points on 18 for 32 shooting from the field including 9 of 18 from behind the arc. What gets lost in the stat sheet is the energy Allen puts forth to play the game. When watching the Celts on offense, I spend more time watching Allen than I do watching the ball. He is that entertaining as he weaves in and out of the defense looking for the smallest of openings.
Yes, I know the Celts lost by one, and Allen toed the line once on an attempt behind the three-point arc. But with all that said, and as hot as Allen was, WHY DIDN’T PAUL PIERCE PASS TO A WIDE-OPEN ALLEN AT THE END OF THE SECOND OVERTIME PERIOD?
I always thought Seabiscuit was the greatest “athlete” ever. Mine the Bird did a great imitation of the Biscuit on Saturday. Pinched at the start, Mine the Bird fell at least 20 lengths off the pace. When he finally made his charge it was in a weaving fashion very reminiscent of Seabiscuit. I will grant you however, that Mine the Bird has just one outstanding performance to his credit. The Biscuit made a habit of winning when he shouldn’t and coming from way back and weaving through a field like it was standing still. Seabiscuit wouldn’t lose. Mine the Bird has not shown that kind of athleticism – yet. Of course, no credit to the jockey. We all know THEY are not athletes.
