I hope it’s ok, but I thought I’d use Open Thread Thursday to introduce a little series that Smitty and I are going to be doing, starting tomorrow: a position-by-position Baseball Mt. Rushmore.

Every Friday, we’re going to start a new position. Each of us will nominate six candidates and provide a brief argument for each. We’re doing this independent of each other, so there will be crossover. Then, we’re encouraging the rest of you to discuss/debate our choices and/or add your own. Even if neither of us nominates your guy, that doesn’t rule him out. You’ll just need to provide a stronger argument, I suppose.

Over the course of the week, Smitty and I will read and contribute to the discussion, then the following week, we’ll announce the four heads that will go up on that position’s Mt. Rushmore…based on our opinions and those of the other contributors to the debate. If we can’t decide, we’re going to consult with Casey on the final decision.

We should be able to get a lot of mileage out of this discussion, and I’m sure it will get quite interesting. I know that Smitty, Casey and I are all looking forward to it.

All right you Yankee fans and Yankee haters. Rochester sports columnist Bob Matthews – the very one who I quoted as saying TO would never come to Buffalo – this week wrote how much the Yankees are missing A-Rod. Has he looked at the steady decline of the Yankees since A-Rod’s arrival? When A-Rod came to NY the Yankees were WS contenders. By last year he had “led” them to missing the playoffs completely. Their poor April without him notwithstanding, I think A-Rod’s “body of work” the past few years has clearly established him as the least valuable talented player in the history of baseball. A few years ago I put forth the theory of the “A-Rod jinx.” It states hat A-Rod will take his new team steadily downhill while his old team will at least temporarily improve significantly. Here’s hoping that the Yankees keep him forever!

Gee Pete – I can kinda see where Matthews is coming from. After all with Mr. April in the lineup, the Bronx Bombers would be running away with the AL East.

Note that they are starting to surge WITHOUT him. But he will change all that once he returns to the line up and the games start to take on greater importance. After all, that’s his game; play well when they don’t count as much (April) and hide when they do (September/October).

We’ve talked so much about the East, how about Ron Artest becoming Mr. Likable in Houston and propelling the Rockets to the second round. How awkward for Tracy McGrady – only scoring champ to never get out of the first round. Is it possible that Artest is rehabilitated? Did anyone see the interview with him and Yao joking about his running into the stands? That was genuinely funny and genuinely awkward at the same time. I hope, HOPE, he can cause some trouble for Kobe defensively.

That fact of the matter to me is: The team felt obligated to run everything through McGrady and McGrady felt obligated to score, and score only. He is a great scorer but an average basketball player. And now, go figure, they are feeding the ball to their somewhat agile, young, athletic 7’6″ center and the floor is as wide as the ocean.

“Rehabilitated? That’s just a made up word. So you go on and stamp your forms sonny and quit wasting my time.”

Oh – and some are calling for Garnett to pull a Willis Reed in game 7. I wouldn’t put it past him, and he probably still moves a little faster than Perkins, but I for one do not desire to see this. He’s far more entertaining on the bench when he scowls and stares down the Bulls side after every big shot, then commences to F-bombing the world. Note to Kevin: it’s round one, both teams are missing one of their best players, and most children who are also fans of the NBA probably get TNT.

Rey – I was thinking about the same thing – Artest that is. Don’t know how believable he is. Might he be taking lithium?

Considering McGrady, Howard, Iverson, and Ben Wallace (Bulls) – do we have an addition by subtraction article? I know it doesn’t work very well when considering the Celts, but it does with those other four teams.
