Comment of the week, made verbally, not on the site, to me by Casey after I said I felt Memphis was the only thing close to a shoo-in on Thursday;
“The Missouri coach’s previous job was at UAB. His UAB team handed Memphis their last C-USA loss.”
Maybe I should have done a tale of the tape for Memphis -Missouri. Because I didn’t do too well with my predictions for two other games last night. That’s what I get for not going with my original instincts about Duke – that they were a sweet sixteen team and nothing more.
As for Xavier – ask JD about me during that one. How many more times were Xavier defenders going to fall for Sam Young’s stupid friggin up fake?
Casey, yes Duke and Memphis spoiled a lot of brackets last night. As far as Sam Young’s up fake, the last time I saw a fake like that I put you in the emergency room as the result of a well placed knee to the forehead. Go ‘cuse!
Nova’s defense was awesome last night. If you don’t have an inside game to challenge them with, then you better make a very high % of treys. Duke did neither. Duke needs another Boozer or Sheldon Williams to be more than a Sweet 16 – E8 team. They’re too one dimensional on both O and D. Can’t defend the paint, can’t really score in the paint. Sounds like ND, but Duke is better than ND … more athletic.
Still cannot believe Mizzou put up 100 on Memphis. Wow.
Credit to Villanova as they were the better team last night. Duke couldn’t hit water if it fell out of a boat last night, and that was a combination of Nova’s defense and Duke’s inability to hit the open shots.
The good news? Both Singler and Henderson threw up duds last night – should be enough to bring them back next year.
Casey – question for you. Is Mizzou that good or was this a case of Memphis’ soft regular season record catching up with them?
Memphis played the same schedule last year. Missouri is tough and Mike Anderson has Calipari figured out. Also Memphis was not as good as last year. Look at the players they lost. And it took Calipari about 15 games to figure out that Evans was a point guard. That might have cost him some maturation that he needed vs. the Mizzou press.
aw c’mon Bunch. At least I made it look like I was gonna shoot. Young? He’s standing straight up and down and shows the ball. Then defenders start jumpin’ around like school girls at a Beatles’ concert in the 60s.
I’m a little confused as to why many are calling this year’s NCAA a “boring tournament.” I love the upsets and cinderella stories, but this is a unique year. We don’t have 2 or 3 teams that dominated all year. We’ve had more #1s than I can remember and everyone beat up on everyone else. Few stand it, but certainly wouldn’t say there is an obvious, dominant team out there.
With that said, is there any other scenario you’d rather have than these teas duking it out at the end? I don’t want a George Mason ruining it this year because there are so many teams that are good. I’ve loved it so far, capped off with an amazing Nova-Pitt game last night.
Some analysts have gone so far as to say we need to expand the field. That would be a waste of time. Others have evern said we need a BCS style system. Are you kidding? The best teams are playing it out, they way it should be. I swear some fans can find anything to complain about. This tournament is turning out exactly like I had hoped, and I still have no clue who is going to take it all.
As for expanding the field – Bob Ryan made a great comment a couple of weeks ago – something to the effect of – the NCAA basketball tournament starts when the conference tournaments begin. Every team can earn a spot in the next game. The field is already expanded. With the exception of the Ivy League any team that can put together three of four wins can find themselves playing in front of a national audience.
The tournament is boring for folks who think the only purpose of these games in March is to prove that their brackets make them Dr. Naismith.
