Apologies for my extended absence from the site … had a couple business trips, etc.

Anyway, this comment will also serve as my nomination for POTW. How about those Fresno State Bulldogs, the new NCAA baseball champion?!?!? What a cinderella story … their run to the NCAA title is nothing less than miraculous … possibly the most unlikely victory march in our memory. This might rank higher than Miracle on Ice, Villanova over Georgetown, Jets over Colts, etc in terms of “upsets”.

Here are the facts: Fresno State entered post-season play as a #4 regional seed … and only because they were able to win the WAC tournament. Since there are 16 regions, Fresno was essentially no higher than a March Madness equivalent of a #13 seed, but they were probably closer to a #16 given their modestly over .500 record coming in and an RPI in the 80′s. Can you imagine a 15 or 16 seed winning the NCAA basketball title??? Nope, nada, never, no way Jose!!!

They are the first #4 regional seed to reach the Elite 8 that go to Omaha for the CWS. They knocked off No. 3 national seed Arizona State in the super regionals and beat No. 6 Rice and No. 2 North Carolina twice to get to the CWS finals. They won potential elimination games 6 times, including two in a row vs Georgia to win the title. Fresno closed the season with a 47-31 record. Miami, the No. 1 national seed, brought three first-round draft picks to Omaha and left after three games. Fresno State’s highest draft pick was second-rounder Tanner Scheppers, and he missed the postseason with a shoulder injury.

Wow … does this define “rising to the occasion” or what?!?!?! Can anyone trump this with a better Cinderella Story?

    Wally

NBA Draft tonight and it seems like the Heat are now leaning towards O.J. Mayo with the second pick. I understand that he’s pretty talented, but from the games I’ve watched this past college season, he seems lazy. No defense from him. Plus, will he work well with Wade? I really hope the Heat plan on getting a big man to complement Wade in the next year. I’ve heard they are planning on making a run at Carlos Boozer when his contract is up. Plus, an athlete from USC named O.J.? Yikes! Might just want to go with Beasley after all.

The Clippers are trying to trade up to the fourth pick. If I’m Eric Gordon, Bayless, Lopez, or whoever I’m looking at my agent and asking, “is it too late to go back to college?”

Is Joe Alexander this year’s Adam Morrison? Tall SF who can shoot, but he goes to the rack much better and from what I remember in the Big East tournament, can go down low and guard some big post players if he has to. I don’t know – it seems like the ‘sleeper’ who gets all this hype always seems to flop.

Whoever gets Chris Douglas-Roberts late in the first round or early second is getting a steal. He is the one guy on Memphis that didn’t Rose to achieve what he did. I hate to say that, because Chad Ford has him going to Boston. Ach – I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

One more comment and Muels is off the side bar!

I have no other comments (does that count?)

Well … OK … Bulls drafted D Rose, as we all know. Seems to have followed the conventional wisdom espoused on this website.

Agree with the comment re: CDR … he’s gonna be a good one.

    Go Muels!!!

I want to be the one that gets Muels off the list and me on.

Don’t look now but the Yanks are ona little roll. Joba pitched a pretty good game last night. Could be an interesting summer.

I want to applaud Casey for the big fat distortion that has raised the venom towards me…

Interested that the World Champion (can the NBA still claim to crown the World Champion?) Boston Celtics picked a questionable character player from New Mexico (by way of Kansas). Maybe the thought is that KG & Co. can take a misguided talent and make it work… Worth a shot…

JD- part of me wants to share in your hope that the Yanks are awakening, making the greatest rivalry in sports as important as it should be, but another part of me is concerned that Brian Cashman may be out of a job before the season closes out…and I honestly think he is doing the right things…

Sunday’s Euro Championship should be an interesting matchup- both offenses could break out at anytime, but both defenses could offer up opportunities for the opposing offenses- a combination that could make for very interesting viewing…

Muels has left the list—- and come back!!!!!

    I always knew I liked distortion – :)

Wally – I’m giving you a helmet sticker for that breakdown of the Fresno St. accomplishment. Great stuff – Bravo! Tres Bien!
