Here we have it – twelve days (296 hours but who’s counting) before the champion of the NFL is crowned. The one good thing about the extra week is all the classic video footage of Super Bowls past. The old films provide an opportunity to reminisce.

I am looking for the help of the Clipboard Community to create a comprehensive list of Super Bowl firsts. Nothing can be too obvious. Nothing is too obscure. Nothing is too simple. Nothing is too complex.

For example:
First opponents in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game (later to be named Super Bowl I): Green Bay and Kansas City (kinda obvious)

First venue: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (maybe not so obvious)

First ticket prices: $6, $10, $12 (61,496 tickets sold – about 30,000 less than capacity – getting less obvious)

First MVP: Bart Starr (probably easy)

First points scored: Max McGee scored a touchdown on a thirty-seven yard pass from Starr.

There’s a start. Let’s go from there.

Super Bowl XII had the first Honorary coin flipper: Red Grange. The first 11 Super Bowl coin tosses were done by the Officials

It was 72 degrees during the First Super Bowl Kick-off

The first Super Bowl Commercials sold for $75,000 to $85,000 for 1-minute

The name Super Bowl was thought of when Lamar Hunt saw his daughter’s Super Ball

The first and only team to score 30 points in the Super Bowl and lose? – Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl XIII

Super Bowl I was the first and only Super Bowl shown simultaneously on two TV channels – CBS and NBC.

The NFL decided to use Roman Numerals with each Super Bowl because each season extended between 2 years/

The first defensive MVP of a Super Bowl was Chuck Howley of the Dallas Cowboys against Baltimore in Super Bowl V. It was the first MVP award not won by a QB.

This year, we’ll have either one of the following firsts:

First team to win their first two Super Bowl appearances, then lose their next two (you can check me on that, but I think I’m right).

    OR (the obvious):

First undefeated team to lose a Super Bowl.

Mike Carey will become the first black referee in the Big Game (NFL has the name Super Bowl and Super Sunday trademarked)

Ist halftime performance: University of Michigan and University of Arizona bands

    1st wardrobe malfunction: Janet Jackson

Harvey Martin and Randy White were the first, and only, co-MVP’s of the Super Bowl.

Another thing on Howley, The Cowboys didn’t win the game. I think that is the only time a player on the losing team was awarded the MVP.

  9. CaseyJanuary 23rd, 2008 - 7:13 pm

Z-Dubbs you are correct about Howley…and all the rest.

First AFL team to win the Super bowl: The New York Jets

  27. CaseyJanuary 23rd, 2008 - 10:37 pm

First Super Bowl played on an artificial surface: Super Bowl V at the Orange bowl was played on poly-turf. Can you believe they tore up the lawn at the Orange Bowl to put down a rug for the game.

By the way – Aaron you had comment 1,000 on the Clipboard.

  28. ChasJanuary 24th, 2008 - 12:32 pm

These might actually be somewhat debatable, but here goes:

First franchise “born” post-1970 to win a Super Bowl:
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Shortest time span between franchise inception and Super Bowl victory:
    Miami Dolphins (1966-1972)

If you believe pro-football-reference.com, the answer to both of these questions would be the Baltimore Ravens. But, of course, we all know that the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens in 1996. Therefore, they’re the extension of that franchise, and not the current incarnation of the Cleveland Browns.

  29. ChasJanuary 24th, 2008 - 12:39 pm

First time the same two teams played in the Super Bowl in back-to-back years: Dallas – Buffalo (SB XXVII – XXVIII)

First team to win the Super Bowl one year and lose the next: Dallas (SB XII – XIII)

First team to lose the Super Bowl one year and win the next: Dallas (SB V – VI)

  30. CaseyJanuary 24th, 2008 - 2:40 pm

First team to win four Super Bowls – Pittsburgh Steelers.
First team to lose four Super Bowls – Minnesota Vikings.

  31. SeanMCJanuary 27th, 2008 - 12:00 am

First time in Super Bowl history that brother’s have quarterbacked Super Bowl teams in consecutive years (Peyton and Eli).

If the Patriots win, first time the QB that led the league in passing yards wins the Super Bowl.

Given that Seau and Harrison are on the Patriots, wouldn’t this also qualify as the First Super Bowl victory for San Diego?
